Jacko's new album flops
07.29.05 (9:24 am)   [edit]
By EMILY SMITH
US Editor
MICHAEL Jackson’s new album sold just 8,000 copies in its first week in the US.

The greatest hits CD charted at a lowly 128 as fans snubbed the star.

The flop is a huge blow for Jacko, 46, who hoped to make a comeback after he was cleared of child sex abuse charges last month.

The Essential Michael Jackson was even beaten by 1970s star Carly Simon’s new CD Moonlight which sold 58,000 copies.

A spokeswoman for Neilsen Soundscan, which monitors US record sales, confirmed: “Carly Simon sold 50,000 more albums than Michael Jackson.”

The figures are a far cry from Jacko’s heyday when he sold 40MILLION copies of Thriller worldwide.

The singer has scarcely been seen since he was acquitted of abusing teenager Gavin Arvizo.

He was taken to hospital with dehydration after the trial and then fled America for a holiday in Bahrain.

The American Islamic Leaders' "Fatwa" is Bogus
07.29.05 (5:52 am)   [edit]

Steven Emerson
The Investigative Project on Terrorism
Email: Stopterror@aol.com

This morning a group of American Islamic leaders held a press conference to announce a fatwa, or Islamic religious ruling, against “terrorism and extremism.” An organization called the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) issued the fatwa, and the Council on American - Islamic Relations (CAIR) organized the press conference, stating that several major U.S. Muslim groups endorsed the fatwa.

In fact, the fatwa is bogus. Nowhere does it condemn the Islamic extremism ideology that has spawned Islamic terrorism. It does not renounce nor even acknowledge the existence of an Islamic jihadist culture that has permeated mosques and young Muslims around the world. It does not renounce Jihad let alone admit that it has been used to justify Islamic terrorist acts. It does not condemn by name any Islamic group or leader. In short, it is a fake fatwa designed merely to deceive the American public into believing that these groups are moderate. In fact, officials of both organizations have been directly linked to and associated with Islamic terrorist groups and Islamic extremist organizations. One of them is an unindicted co-conspirator in a current terrorist case; another previous member was a financier to Al-Qaeda.

I spoke with Judea Pearl, father of murdered journalist Daniel Pearl who told me that the fatwa was “vacuous because it does not name the perpetrators of Islamic terrorist theologies and leaders of Islamic movements like Yousef Al Qaradawi, Osama Bin Laden, Ayman Al Zawahari, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, etc.” Pearl told me that these groups are “trying to perpetrate a deception on the American public.”

Officials of both groups have been linked to various terrorist organizations:

The Chairman of the Fiqh Council, Taha Jaber Al-Alwani, is an unindicted co-conspirator in the case against Sami al-Arian, the alleged North American leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, whose trial began in June 2005 in Tampa, Florida. Mr. Alwani has been named in court documents as an official of several entities in northern Virginia suspected of being connected to terrorist financing. Documents released in the Al Arian trial show that Alwani funded the Islamic Jihad front groups in Tampa.

Another past trustee of the Fiqh Council, Abdurrahman Alamoudi, is serving a 23-year prison sentence for illegal financial dealings with Libya and immigration fraud, has admitted to his part in a plot to assassinate the Saudi Crown Prince, and has vocally announced his support for the terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah. Additionally Alamoudi was just named by Treasury as having been a financier for Al Qaeda.

In 1998, Fiqh Council member Sheikh Muhammad al-Hanooti, gave a speech calling for jihad against the United States and the United Kingdom, saying that “Allah will curse the Americans and British” and “Allah, the curse of Allah will become true on the infidel Jews and on the tyrannical Americans.” Additionally, Hanooti is strongly linked to Hamas, having served on the board of the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP). A 2002 INS memo extensively documented IAP’s support for HAMAS and noted that the “facts strongly suggest” that IAP is “part of HAMAS’ propaganda apparatus.”

On October 28, 2000, Muzammil Siddiqui, the President of FCNA, at a rally in Lafayette Park in Washington D.C., said, “America has to learn -- if you remain on the side of injustice, the wrath of God will come!"

In the past 4 years, several CAIR officials have been convicted of or charged with various terrorism-related offenses.

CAIR has championed and defended officials of Islamic terrorist groups including Hamas leader Musa Abu Marzook, Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Sami al-Arian, Palestinian Islamic Jihad fundraiser Fawaz Damra, and the radical Egyptian cleric Wagdy Ghoneim.

CAIR has repeatedly attacked the prosecutions of Islamic terrorists arrested and/or convicted since 9-11 and has attacked the government’s freezing of Islamic terrorist fronts as part of a “war against Islam” by the United States.

CAIR has led protests against the deportation of radical Islamic clerics who have called for Jihad or who have been fundraisers for Hamas.

CAIR has asserted that the indictment of Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Sami al-Arian on conspiracy to murder more than 100 people was “politically motivated” and instigated by “the attack dogs of the pro-Israeli lobby."

CAIR has been named as a defendant in a civil lawsuit filed by the family of former FBI official John O’Neill, who was killed on 9-11.

One of the signatories to today’s fatwa is Fawaz Damra who was convicted of immigration fraud related to his ties to Palestinian Islamic Jihad and denaturalized. He is currently awaiting a deportation hearing.

Another signatory, the Muslim American Society, is a front for the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States and whose publications have repeatedly supported suicide bombings.

Two Ohio Teens Arrested for Burning Flags
07.29.05 (5:45 am)   [edit]
The Associated Press
Friday, July 29, 2005; 12:57 AM

FAIRFIELD, Ohio -- Two teenage boys were charged Thursday with burning 20 small American flags set up in honor of a soldier who died from injuries suffered in the Iraq war.

Police said the boys apparently did not know the significance of the flags they took from the yard and set afire under a car belonging to the soldier's sister-in-law. The vehicle was destroyed.

The flags were to commemorate Army Pfc. Tim Hines, 21, of Fairfield, who died in a Washington, D.C., hospital July 14 of injuries suffered last month when a bomb was detonated while he was in a convoy traveling in Baghdad. His funeral was last Friday and the fire was set early Saturday.

The boys, ages 15 and 13, were arrested Thursday and charged with one count of arson and two counts of criminal mischief before being released to their parents.

Police did not identify the boys, but said they also were involved in other vandalism that morning.

Fairfield is about 15 miles north of Cincinnati.

Husband beats wife to death for defying 'orders'
07.28.05 (9:34 am)   [edit]
By Samir Salama, Bureau Chief
Abu Dhabi :

A man beat his wife to death because he says she "disobeyed his orders and looked out of the balcony", a police source said.

The incident occurred at midnight on Friday. The Syrian man has been arrested and charged with the 20-year-old woman's murder.

The man, a hairdresser, was returning home from his shop at around 10.30pm, when he saw his second wife, also Syrian, looking out of the balcony of his flat on the first floor.

He got angry, rushed to his flat and started beating her all over her body.

The woman's screams forced his first wife who lives in the same flat, out of bed and she tried to stop him. However, he overpowered her and continued beating his second wife up for half an hour until she fainted.

The 30-year-old man called an ambulance but paramedics found his wife dead.

The accused told police he had not meant to kill her.

"I just wanted to discipline her after she disobeyed my orders. She died while I was hitting her for daring to look out of the balcony," he is said to have told interrogators.

"I used to beat my wives but I never thought that beating would kill any of them. It was just my way of disciplining them," he said.

His first wife told police she had tried hard to stop him but he had beaten her and pushed her away.

"He continued to beat her for almost half an hour before she died," she said.

The accused has been referred to the prosecution on charges of beating his wife to death.

STUDY
Domestic violence is common

* Two-thirds of UAE residents have been the victims of violence or verbal attacks, a study has shown.

* While women are the ones who are hurt the most, the majority of cases occur in the home.

*The study by Dr Mohammad Abdullah Al Mutawa, Professor in Sociology at UAE University, showed that 66.2 per cent of respondents had been physically or verbally assaulted by family, at school or by peers.

* It found that 33.5 per cent of respondents, aged 18 to 30, had been assaulted by their family.

* Women were abused more often than men because families tended to tolerate mistakes by men.

* Nearly 40 per cent of female respondents and 28.8 per cent of male respondents said they had been victims of some form of violence in the family.

* More than 50 per cent of respondents' mothers were insulted, 20.5 per cent beaten and 11.4 per cent assaulted both verbally and physically.

* A total of 16.4 per cent of mothers were assaulted in front of their children, according to the study.

Cisco, ISS file suit against rogue researcher
07.28.05 (5:27 am)   [edit]
Robert Lemos, SecurityFocus 2005-07-27

LAS VEGAS--Networking giant Cisco and security company Internet Security Systems filed on Wednesday a restraining order against the management of the Black Hat Conference and a security expert who told conference attendees that attackers can broadly compromise Cisco routers.

The legal action followed a presentation by security researcher Michael Lynn, a former ISS employee, who brushed off threats of legal action and a broad effort to delete his presentation from conference materials to warn attendees that malicious programs could be run on Cisco routers.

While the information had already been presented by Lynn, a Cisco spokesman said that the companies wanted to prevent further dissemination of inside information about Cisco's routers.

"We don't want them to further discuss it," said Cisco spokesman John Noh. "This is about protecting our intellectual property."

Three weeks of intense discussions between ISS, the researcher, Cisco, and conference management failed on Wednesday. Two days before, Cisco representatives spent eight hours ripping out the ten-page presentation from the conference book and ISS executives decided to pull the presentation, allowing researcher Lynn to speak on a different topic.

In a dramatic reversal on Wednesday, Lynn told attendees he tendered his resignation to ISS less than two hours before he went on stage to present his findings, then proceeded to describe a reliable way to run programs by exploiting the Internet Operating System (IOS), the core software for Cisco routers.

"I feel I had to do what's right for the country and the national infrastructure," he said. "It has been confirmed that bad people are working on this (compromising IOS). The right thing to do here is to make sure that everyone knows that it's vulnerable."

A majority of the Internet infrastructure relies on Cisco networking hardware to route data from one computer to another. While security researchers have found flaws in the IOS router software in the past, almost all the vulnerabilities have only allowed an attacker to degrade communications in what is known as a denial-of-service attack.

Lynn outlined a way to take control of an IOS-based router, using a buffer overflow or a heap overflow, two types of memory vulnerabilities. He demonstrated the attack using a vulnerability that Cisco fixed in April. While that flaw is patched, he stressed that the attack can be used with any new buffer overrun or heap overflow, adding that running code on a router is a serious threat.

"When you attack a host machine, you gain control of that machine--when you control a router, you gain control of the network," Lynn said.

ISS disavowed any foreknowledge of Lynn's intent to resign and present his findings. Cisco condemned the talk in strong terms that suggested the company may initiate legal action against the researcher and the conference, describing the presentation as the illegal publication of proprietary material.

"It is especially regretful, and indefensible, that the Black Hat Conference organizers have given Mr. Lynn a platform to publicly disseminate the information he illegally obtained," the company said in a statement. "We appreciate the cooperation we have received from ISS in this matter. We are working with ISS to continue our joint research in the area of security vulnerabilities."

For his part, Black Hat Conference organizer and founder Jeff Moss denied that he had any idea of Lynn's intent.

"He told me yesterday that he would do his backup presentation," Moss said after the controversial presentation. Moss said he had worked hard to address Cisco's concerns with the original presentation. "We were in the middle of trying to run a conference and lawyers from Cisco were talking about a temporary restraining order."

Fair and Balanced?
07.27.05 (2:31 pm)   [edit]
How fried does the corporate brain of the CBC have to be to issue a memo like the following one to its news staff a couple of days after the first round of terrorist bombings in London?

Distributed to staff at cbc.ca, after some poor worker bee made the egregious error of referring to the London transit bombings as "terror attacks" -- which the CBC later went in and retroactively changed to "attacks" in the best traditions of the Ministry of Truth in 1984 -- it reads in part:

"'Terrorist' and 'terrorism': use extreme caution before using either word ... Rather than calling assailants 'terrorists', we can refer to them as bombers, hijackers, gunmen (if we're sure no women were in the group (my italics)), militants, extremists, attackers or some other appropriate noun."

Now, it's not even the CBC's policy of refusing to call "terrorists" and "terrorism" terrorists and terrorism because it would be "taking sides" (!?) that's the most ludicrous thing here.

While absurd, that's been CBC practice for years, frequently defended by CBC News editor-in-chief Tony Burman, who's also quoted in the memo. Like the BBC and Reuters, the CBC refuses to call "terrorism" terrorism unless it's attributed to a third party, or contained is a direct quote.

But to me, it's the added warning from the CBC that, before using a word like "gunmen" to describe terrorists, CBC staffers must first ensure that "no women were in the group" that places this policy firmly into the realm of Brave New World.

I mean, how far jammed up your own politically correct butt do you have to be not to realize how stupid that sounds?

What's the CBC's big concern here -- that using the term "gunmen" as a substitute for "terrorists" might offend any female "gunpersons" in the group? Surely, it's not a concern about accuracy, because if the CBC was concerned about accuracy , it wouldn't issue orders not to call terrorists ... let's see ... what's the word I'm looking for here? ... oh, yeah ... TERRORISTS.

He gets it. Go read the rest.

Islam Dominates Iraq's Draft Constitution
07.27.05 (12:49 pm)   [edit]
By BASSEM MROUE, Associated Press Writer Tue Jul 26, 4:15 PM ET

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Framers of
Iraq's constitution will designate Islam as the main source of legislation — a departure from the model set down by U.S. authorities during the occupation — according to a draft published Tuesday.

The draft states no law will be approved that contradicts "the rules of Islam" — a requirement that could affect women's rights and set Iraq on a course far different from the one envisioned when U.S.-led forces invaded in 2003 to topple
Saddam Hussein.

"Islam is the official religion of the state and is the main source of legislation," reads the draft published in the government newspaper Al-Sabah. "No law that contradicts with its rules can be promulgated."

The document also grants the Shiite religious leadership in Najaf a "guiding role" in recognition of its "high national and religious symbolism."

Al-Sabah noted, however, that there were unspecified differences among the committee on the Najaf portion. Those would presumably include Kurds, Sunni Arabs and secular Shiites on the 71-member committee.

During the U.S.-run occupation, which ended June 28, 2004, key Shiite and some Sunni politicians sought to have Islam designated the main source of legislation in the interim constitution, which took effect in March 2004.

However, the U.S. governor of Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, blocked the move, agreeing only that Islam would be considered "a source" — but not the only one. At the time, prominent Shiite politicians agreed to forego a public battle with Bremer and pursue the issue during the drafting of the permanent constitution.

Some women's groups fear strict interpretation of Islamic principles could erode their rights in such areas as divorce and inheritance. It could also move Iraq toward a more religiously based society than was envisioned by U.S. planners who hoped it would be a beacon of Western-style democracy in a region of one-party rule and theocratic regimes.

Nope. Didn't see that comin'...

'Pulsa denura' invoked against Sharon
07.26.05 (12:10 pm)   [edit]
Far-right activists instigated a pulsa denura - Aramaic for 'lashes of fire' - death curse against Prime Minister Ariel Sharon last Thursday night in an effort to thwart the upcoming disengagement plan.

The ceremony was held late Thursday night at the gravesite of Shlomo Ben-Yosef, a Betar member who was hanged by the British in 1938 for firing on an Arab bus in protest of numerous attacks by Arabs on Jewish targets.

Twenty married men, including rabbis and kabalists, participated in the ceremony. All 20, including Yosef Dayan - who instigated the same curse several months prior to the assassination of former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin - assembled at the gravesite, which is located near Safed.

Each man immersed himself in the mikve (ritual bath) before donning black garb and beginning to chant.

They had received permission to invoke the pulsa denura from a host of rabbis and kabalists, who said it was the appropriate time to resort to using the curse.

Far-right activist Michael Ben-Horin explained that the point of the curse was to exempt a human from having to kill Ariel Sharon, allowing "the angels of destructions" to do it instead.

Baruch Ben Yosef, a far-right activist who participated in the ceremony, told The Jerusalem Post that "The ten men prayed to god for him to rid us of the evil murderous dictator [Sharon].

Ben Yosef said that the gravesite was chosen because, "Shlomo was the antithesis of a Sharon."

"Ben Yosef gave his life for the Jewish people and refused to recognize the British government, while Sharon does everything for himself," Ben Yosef declared.

Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz has decided in the past not to launch criminal investigations into rabbis who have instigated the death curse.

Mazuz's decision was based on a previous court ruling in the matter of Avigdor Askin, in which it was decided that the pulsa denura curse ceremony does not constitute a criminal offense.

Could one of my Hebrew friends explain this to me? Is it taken seriously by the community at large, or is it considered more of a "Political Statement?"

Bill Clinton Pardoned Nat'l Security Leaker
07.26.05 (6:43 am)   [edit]
No wonder 2008 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has been silent as a churchmouse about Karl Rove while her Democratic colleagues call for his prosecution for leaking classified information about CIA employee Valerie Plame.

Turns out - in the only case in U.S. history of a person successfully prosecuted for leaking classified information to the press - Hillary's husband pardoned the guilty party.

On January 20, 2001, President Clinton pardoned Samuel Loring Morison, a civilian analyst with the Office of Naval Intelligence. In 1984, Morison had been convicted of providing classified satellite photos of an under-construction Soviet nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to Britain's Jane's Defense Weekly.

He received a two-year jail sentence.

In pardoning Morison, Clinton dismissed the advice of the CIA.

"We said we were obviously opposed -- it was a vigorous 'Hell, no," one senior intelligence official told the Washington Post at the time. "We think . . . giving pardons to people who are convicted of doing that sends the wrong signal to people who are currently entrusted with classified information."

Morison is the only person ever successfully prosecuted under the 1917 Espionage Act, the law invoked by Democrats who want to nail Rove after it became clear that he didn't violate the 1982 Intelligence Identities Protection Act.

But it's going to be difficult for Dems to feign national security outrage over Plame's outing when the husband of their party's presidential frontrunner let an actual convicted leaker off the hook.

Last week, when Sen. John Kerry called for Mr. Rove to be fired with Hillary standing by his side, she nodded silently. When reporters asked her what she thought of the alleged Rove outrage, she offered only, "I'm nodding."

No doubt while remembering her husband's pardon of Mr. Morison.

Democrats doing what Democrats do best.

Van Gogh killer jailed for life
07.26.05 (5:49 am)   [edit]
A Dutch court has sentenced a 27-year-old radical Islamist to life in prison for the November murder of controversial film-maker Theo van Gogh.

Mohammed Bouyeri, who has joint Dutch-Moroccan nationality, had made a courtroom confession and had vowed to do the same again if given the chance.

The murder in Amsterdam stunned the Netherlands. The court ruled that it was a terrorist act.

The judge said the murder had triggered "great fear and insecurity" in society.

"The murder of Theo van Gogh provoked a wave of revulsion and disdain in the Netherlands. Theo van Gogh was mercilessly slaughtered," said Judge Udo Willem Bentinck.

Brutal killing

Bouyeri had told the court he had acted out of religious conviction.

Clutching a copy of the Koran, he said that "the law compels me to chop off the head of anyone who insults Allah and the prophet".

...Alleged network

The judgement said the killer had shown "a complete disregard for human life".

Mr Bouyeri said nothing, but looked "very calm and superior", according to Mr Hesen.

He was also convicted of the attempted murder of several police officers and bystanders and illegal possession of firearms.

His sentence carries no possibility of parole.

The Dutch are still struggling to understand how Bouyeri, who was born and raised in Amsterdam, turned to radical Islam, the BBC's Geraldine Coughlan reports.

After this trial, the authorities will decide if he can be prosecuted separately for membership of a terrorist organisation.

Twelve other terrorism suspects are awaiting trial in the Netherlands and prosecutors believe Mr Bouyeri is a key figure in that group, but so far they have not come up with enough evidence to charge him.

After the Van Gogh murder, mosques in several Dutch cities were the targets of vandalism and failed arson attempts.

Great. Now he can spend the next 40-50 years creating other monsters JUST like him...

Father Beats Up Daughter for Sending SMS to TV Channel
07.25.05 (5:36 am)   [edit]
Arab News

ASIR, 24 July 2005 — A father watching a Lebanese satellite TV channel saw his daughter’s name appear on the SMS line on a live interview with a Lebanese singer. The SMS contained words of love and admiration for the singer, Al-Madinah newspaper reported. The father searched his daughter’s cell phone and confirmed that it was she who was sending the messages to the website. He beat her up badly and the next day had a technician remove the Lebanese and music channels from his satellite channel list.

Dear Islamic World
07.22.05 (10:23 am)   [edit]
Dear Islamic World

You have been very naughty lately. The time has come for us in the west to impose a "time out" on you.

Quite simply, all flghts to and from Iran, Sudan, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Syria shall cease for six months. All young men between ages 16-35 are banned from all flights from Islamic countries until there is a complete cessation of Islamic violence. Private jets and airlines will not fly.

Sorry for the inconvenience but you seem to have released a radical ideology into the wild and we need to contain it so until the contagion is back under control. The privilege of entering our societies is just that, a privilege. Your willful disrespect to the needs of our societies will not be tolerated. If you wish to be here, you must respect our laws and customs like decent guests.

We don't want to hear any more crap about Crusades, Israel, Iraq or Afghanistan; there is nothing to discuss on these topics because the time has simply come for you to shut up and fix yourselves and stop using your failures as excuses for not fixing your problems. Our people will not be murdered because you are pissed off that Sudan doesn't have a space program and Saudi Arabia can't design a supercomputer.

Your children think it is somehow wonderful or an advancement of your relgious beliefs when our people are murdered. In Cairo, the father of a notorious mass murderer cheers for what his son did to our people and hopes that others will do the same and that he is willing to use money fom his interview to sponsor still more mass murders.

You have the mistaken belief that we do not possess the will to defend ouselves. Now you know you are wrong.

Oh and another thing, release all your slaves and stop the killing in Darfur today.

Respectfully yours,

The Western World

Superb.

And Then They Came After Us (We’re at war. How about acting like it?)
07.22.05 (7:19 am)   [edit]
First the terrorists of the Middle East went after the Israelis. From 1967 we witnessed 40 years of bombers, child murdering, airline hijacking, suicide murdering, and gratuitous shooting. We in the West usually cried crocodile tears, and then came up with all sorts of reasons to allow such Middle Eastern killers a pass.

Yasser Arafat, replete with holster and rants at the U.N., had become a “moderate” and was thus free to steal millions of his good-behavior money. If Hamas got European cash, it would become reasonable, ostracize its “military wing,” and cease its lynching and vigilantism.

When some tried to explain that Wars 1-3 (1947, 1956, 1967) had nothing to do with the West Bank, such bothersome details fell on deaf ears.

When it was pointed out that Germans were not blowing up Poles to get back lost parts of East Prussia nor were Tibetans sending suicide bombers into Chinese cities to recover their country, such analogies were caricatured.

When the call for a “Right of Return” was making the rounds, few cared to listen that over a half-million forgotten Jews had been cleansed from Syria, Iraq, and Egypt, and lost billions in property.

When the U.N. and the EU talked about “refugee camps,” none asked why for a half-century the Arab world could not build decent housing for its victimized brethren, or why 1 million Arabs voted in Israel, but not one freely in any Arab country.

The security fence became “The Wall,” and evoked slurs that it was analogous to barriers in Korea or Berlin that more often kept people in than out. Few wondered why Arabs who wished to destroy Israel would mind not being able to live or visit Israel.

In any case, anti-Semitism, oil, fear of terrorism — all that and more fooled us into believing that Israel’s problems were confined to Israel. So we ended up with a utopian Europe favoring a pre-modern, terrorist-run, Palestinian thugocracy over the liberal democracy in Israel. The Jews, it was thought, stirred up a hornet’s nest, and so let them get stung on their own.

...Apparently, the hatred of radical Islam was not just predicated on the “occupation” of the West Bank. Instead it involved the pretexts of Americans protecting Saudi Arabia from another Iraqi attack, the United Nations boycott of Iraq, the removal of the Taliban and Saddam, and always as well as the Crusades and the Reconquista.

But Europe was supposedly different. Unlike the United States, it was correct on the Middle East, and disarmed after the Cold War. Indeed, the European Union was pacifistic, socialist, and guilt-ridden about former colonialism.

Hundreds of thousands of Muslims were left alone in unassimilated European ghettoes and allowed to preach or promulgate any particular hatred of the day they wished. Conspire to kill a Salmon Rushdie, talk of liquidating the “apes and pigs,” distribute Mein Kampf and the Protocols, or plot in the cities of France and Germany to blow up the Pentagon and the World Trade Center — all that was about things “over there” and in a strange way was thought to ensure that Europe got a pass at home.

But the trump card was always triangulation against the United States. Most recently anti-Americanism was good street theater in Rome, Paris, London, and the capitals of the “good” West.

But then came Madrid — and the disturbing fact that after the shameful appeasement of its withdrawal from Iraq, further plots were hatched against Spanish justices and passenger trains.

Surely a Holland would be exempt — Holland of wide-open Amsterdam fame where anything goes and Muslim radicals could hate in peace. Then came the butchering of Theo Van Gogh and the death threats against parliamentarian Hirsi Ali — and always defiance and promises of more to come rather than apologies for their hatred.

Yet was not Britain different? After all, its capital was dubbed Londonistan for its hospitality to Muslims across the globe. Radical imams openly preached jihad against the United States to their flock as thanks for being given generous welfare subsidies from her majesty’s government. But it was the United States, not liberal Britain, that evoked such understandable hatred.

But now?

After Holland, Madrid, and London, European operatives go to Israel not to harangue Jews about the West Bank, but to receive tips about preventing suicide bombings. And the cowboy Patriot Act to now-panicked European parliaments perhaps seems not so illiberal after all.

So it is was becoming clear that butchery by radical Muslims in Bali, Darfur, Iraq, the Philippines Thailand, Turkey, Tunisia, and Iraq was not so tied to particular and “understandable” Islamic grievances.

Perhaps the jihadist killing was not over the West Bank or U.S. hegemony after all, but rather symptoms of a global pathology of young male Islamic radicals blaming all others for their own self-inflicted miseries, convinced that attacks on the infidel would win political concessions, restore pride, and prove to Israelis, Europeans, Americans — and about everybody else on the globe — that Middle Eastern warriors were full of confidence and pride after all.

Meanwhile an odd thing happened. It turns out that the jihadists were cowards and bullies, and thus selective in their targets of hatred. A billion Chinese were left alone by radical Islam — even though the Chinese were secularists and mostly godless, as well as ruthless to their own Uighur Muslim minorities. Had bin Laden issued a fatwa against Beijing and slammed an airliner into a skyscraper in Shanghai, there is no telling what a nuclear China might have done.

India too got mostly a pass, other than the occasional murdering by Pakistani zealots. Yet India makes no effort to apologize to Muslims. When extremists occasionally riot and kill, they usually cease quickly before the response of a much more unpredictable angry populace.

What can we learn from all this?

Jihadists hardly target particular countries for their “unfair” foreign policies, since nations on five continents suffer jihadist attacks and thus all apparently must embrace an unfair foreign policy of some sort.

Typical after the London bombing is the ubiquitous Muslim spokesman who when asked to condemn terrorism, starts out by deploring such killing, assuring that it has nothing to do with Islam, yet then ending by inserting the infamous “but” — as he closes with references about the West Bank, Israel, and all sorts of mitigating factors. Almost no secular Middle Easterners or religious officials write or state flatly, “Islamic terrorism is murder, pure and simple evil. End of story, no ifs or buts about it.”

Second, thinking that the jihadists will target only Israel eventually leads to emboldened attacks on the United States. Assuming America is the only target assures terrorism against Europe. Civilizations will either hang separately or triumph over barbarism together. It is that simple — and past time for Europe and the United States to rediscover their common heritage and shared aims in eradicating this plague of Islamic fascism.

Third, Islamicists are selective in their attacks and hatred. So far global jihad avoids two billion Indians and Chinese, despite the fact that their countries are far tougher on Muslims than is the United States or Europe. In other words, the Islamicists target those whom they think they can intimidate and blackmail.

Unfettered immigration, billions in cash grants to Arab autocracies, alliances of convenience with dictatorships, triangulation with Middle Eastern patrons of terror, blaming the Jews — civilization has tried all that.

It is time to relearn the lessons from the Cold War, when we saw millions of noble Poles, Romanians, Hungarians, and Czechs as enslaved under autocracy and a hateful ideology, and in need of democracy before they could confront the Communist terror in their midst.

But until the Wall fell, we did not send billions in aid to their Eastern European dictatorships nor travel freely to Prague or Warsaw nor admit millions of Communist-ruled Bulgarians and Albanians onto our shores.

Western Terrorists Have Roots In Earlier Colonialism

WESTERN TERRORISTS HAVE ROOTS IN EARLIER COLONIALISM
Yahoo! News | Thu Jul 21 | By Georgie Anne Geyer

WASHINGTON -- There is plenty of blame going around these days for the horrific London bombings. A small minority criticizes London authorities for not expecting the attacks. Even many tolerant Brits are saying that the British Muslim community should have been more watchful. The vast majority, of course, rightly blames the perpetrators themselves, the young Muslim radicals who refer to London as "Londonistan."

But there is one group that is almost escaping censure -- and it was this group that deliberately and self-righteously set the stage for what happened nearly two weeks ago: the sweet, well-meaning, all-knowing liberal multiculturalists who came out of the 1960s youth rebellion and played upon the goodness of both British and American societies to let just about anybody immigrate into the painfully developed polities of their nations.

Their arguments were oh-so-chock-full of humanness! The multiculturalists, who came to dominate Anglo universities on both sides of the Atlantic, believed that there were no differences between men. Essentially, they denied culture and memory. Man was a cipher, a creature who could be won over by goodness and live happily ever after. And why not right there in England itself?

There had been conservative, loyal Pakistani immigrants living peacefully in England since the 1960s. But it was in the earthshaking '90s -- after the fall of the Soviet Union, after the presumed Muslim defeat of the Russians in Afghanistan, and after Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini's "fatwa" to urge Muslims, even in Britain, to kill writer Salman Rushdie -- that it became clear that this new generation of Muslims were not flocking to England to become English, but rather to impose their philosophy on England. London soon began to be called "Londonistan," not without reason.

Meanwhile, the British government, again in the humane interest of providing exile and asylum for the hunted of the world, allowed Arab dissident groups, many of them radical fundamentalists expelled from their own countries, to set up shop in London. From there, they were free to broadcast and to propagate their radical ideas. Let the Saudis, the Tunisians, the Algerians, the Egyptians complain; England was the home of the free.

One of these cases I know quite well. This is the case of Rached Ghannouchi, a radical Islamist who burst upon the moderate Tunisian scene in the '80s after traveling to Albania. There he inexplicably fell in love with the vicious and barbaric Albanian communism, let his beard grow "like Castro's," and finally formed a fundamentalist An-Nahda party among the secret Islamist organizations in Tunisia. Among other things, these groups had organized a super-secret "Special Apparatus" of intelligence and assassination that would carry out the coups and killings of heretics.

His group had the right to run for office, but instead they tried to assassinate the president and burned to death several policemen. An-Nahda was finished in tolerant and progressive Tunisia; so Ghannouchi fled to London, where he lives today, still organizing against his country's rapidly developing people. The curious thing is the English have allowed him to have a satellite to broadcast to Tunisia but have denied moderate Tunisians the same right.

But there is more.

I just spoke by phone with Karen Armstrong, the brilliant Islamic scholar and author of "Islam: A Short History." From London, she stressed that "all of this should have been expected, but our security people of the '90s were thinking only of the Irish problem. What we are seeing now is the ongoing story of colonialism. These young men are only coming here because of the regimes that we left behind. Colonialism didn't finish when we came home, you see. They are now continuing it here -- it is really a new kind of nationalism."

Then take the instructive case of The Netherlands, Holland. During the late 1980s and early '90s, I used to make a point of stopping there every couple of years on my reporting trips.

First, I heard the wondrous multicultural love story: All the Dutch Antilleans and Middle Easterners who were coming would fit right in, enrich the community, become magically "Dutch." The news media and politicians were socially forbidden from speaking of any problems with immigration or assimilation. I went back again, and the Dutch, now not quite so sure of themselves, had decided that new immigrants must have two months of Dutch language and history training.

None of it worked. Today, the country is filled with young men from the Rif Mountains of Morocco. They are mostly illiterate and, seeing Holland as a decadent society, have formed a hostile "parallel society." The brutal murder of Dutch artist Theo van Gogh by a Muslim fanatic was the final nail in the multicultural coffin. The idea was dead, but the problem caused by it was a Gargantua in their midst.

European countries are now clamoring for immigrants to be assimilated. It's too late, and it's their own fault. They were blase about the realities of human nature and the profundities of human culture when they let so many from clearly antithetical societies enter on their own terms. The Europeans never even asked anything of the immigrants: not personal respect, not reverence for the new country, not promises to fulfill the duties of citizenship.

And on top of that, they brought all the worst fundamentalist leaders of the Middle East right into their capital cities, where they could live freely and propagate their archaic beliefs, further inspiring the isolated and angry immigrant youth.

Europe can still do something about all of this, and attempts to deal more deftly with moderate Muslims in London represent one step. But really, until the Europeans understand what they did in those years -- and why they did it -- this sad story will only repeat itself.

Iran: Two gay teenagers publicly executed
07.21.05 (2:03 pm)   [edit]
In Iran mullahs' henchmen publicly hanged two young boys in Edalat (Justice) Square in Mashhad

In shocking crime, mullahs’ henchmen hang an 18-year-old, and a juvenile under 18 years of age Iranian Resistance urges EU to cut off all dialogue with the religious fascism ruling Iran.

The clerical regime’s henchmen publicly hanged two young boys in Edalat (Justice) Square in Mashhad (northeast Iran). One was 18 and the other below 18 years of age.

Before hanging the victims, the henchmen flogged each of them 228 times. The executioners wore masks fearing reprisals and anti-riot forces put the entire area under their control to prevent outbreak of public protests.

The victims were charged with disrupting public order among other things. They had been imprisoned since 14 months ago, meaning that they were 16 years old at the time of the alleged offences.

The dramatic rise in public executions, including those of under-18 juveniles, comes as the European Union has refused in the past three years to table a resolution at the United Nations Human Rights Commission to condemn the violations of human rights in Iran. Instead, it has engaged in “human rights dialogue” with the murderous mullahs. The execution of juveniles is a by-product of this shameful dialogue.

The barbaric executions occurred exactly 24 hours prior to the start of negotiations between the mullahs’ representative and the EU-3 in London. Silence vis-à-vis this hideous crime and the continuation of talks with this regime is tantamount to trampling on all values for which European nations fought for centuries and offered many sacrifices.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) underscores that these executions were a blatant violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and most international covenants. It calls for the censure of the mullahs’ regime and the appointment by Human Rights Commission of a special rapporteur to monitor the situation of human rights in Iran. The NCRI urges the European Union to immediately stop any dialogue with this medieval regime and not allow the mullahs to use such contacts to legitimize their atrocities.

David Lynch seeks world peace (will raise $7 billion to meditate away the evils of the US military)
07.21.05 (9:51 am)   [edit]
LOS ANGELES - US film director David Lynch is seeking to raise $7 billion to fund a giant programme of transcendental meditation which he says will foster world peace.

The Oscar-nominated movie-maker famed for dark and disturbing films including "Blue Velvet," "Eraserhead" and "Twin Peaks" today will launch the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-based Education and World Peace.

The foundation's goal is to raise money to allow meditation to be taught in schools and eventually spread across the world by practitioners, easing global stress and tensions and promoting harmony, he said in an interview with AFP.

"I want to raise $7 billion," he said of the launch of the foundation that aims to propagate what Lynch says is a proven method of improving health, banishing stress and tension and reducing violence.

"People laugh about that, they have a really good time with it.

But the real joke is that we don't laugh when the US government develops a bomb for $2 billion that only serves to kill people.

"They spend billions of dollars on military projects and people don't bat an eyelid. That's a pathetic, sick joke," Lynch, who has practiced transcendental meditation for 32 years said at his high-tech Hollywood studio.

The money raised by Lynch, who is planning a tour of the United States in September and October to help raise the funds, will be used to fund meditation in schools that wish to teach it.

Lynch did not specify why such a large amount of money was needed for the programme or how he planned to raise it.

However, the 59-year-old director said, he hoped that the $7 billion would ultimately sit in a bank account unused earning interest that would pay for the programmes.

The teachings that Lynch, a Hollywood outsider and free-thinker who also paints and plays the guitar, bases his beliefs on are those of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who became a guru to celebrities including the Beatles.

The Netherlands-based Maharishi, who became controversial in the 1960s and 70s, developed transcendental meditation 50 years ago to develop the "full creative potential" of a person and to "promote a peaceful world."

With a corps of 8,000 people dedicated to meditating and pumping out positive waves, peace will gradually settle on earth, Lynch explained, citing the quantum physics theory of a "unified field" as the basis of the argument.

"This is real, it works," Lynch said of the power of meditation.

"It's abstract, but it's very real."

James ‘Scotty’ Doohan dies at age 85
07.20.05 (8:06 am)   [edit]
The Associated Press
Updated: 12:03 p.m. ET July 20, 2005

LOS ANGELES - James Doohan, the burly chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the original “Star Trek” TV series and motion pictures who responded to the command “Beam me up, Scotty,” died early Wednesday. He was 85.

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. at his Redmond, Wash., home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer’s disease, he said.

The Canadian-born Doohan was enjoying a busy career as a character actor when he auditioned for a role as an engineer in a new space adventure on NBC in 1966. A master of dialects from his early years in radio, he tried seven different accents.

“The producers asked me which one I preferred,” Doohan recalled 30 years later. “I believed the Scot voice was the most commanding. So I told them, ‘If this character is going to be an engineer, you’d better make him a Scotsman.”’

The series, which starred William Shatner as Capt. James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as the enigmatic Mr. Spock, attracted an enthusiastic following of science fiction fans, especially among teenagers and children, but not enough ratings power. NBC canceled it after three seasons.

When the series ended in 1969, Doohan found himself typecast as Montgomery Scott, the canny engineer with a burr in his voice. In 1973, he complained to his dentist, who advised him: “Jimmy, you’re going to be Scotty long after you’re dead. If I were you, I’d go with the flow.”

“I took his advice,” said Doohan, “and since then everything’s been just lovely.”

Rest easy, Scotty. You will be missed.

Atta's father praises London bombs
07.20.05 (6:58 am)   [edit]
CAIRO, Egypt (CNN) -- The father of one of the hijackers who commandeered the first plane that crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, praised the recent terror attacks in London and said many more would follow.

Speaking to CNN producer Ayman Mohyeldin Tuesday in his apartment in the upper-middle-class Cairo suburb of Giza, Mohamed el-Amir said he would like to see more attacks like the July 7 bombings of three London subway trains and a bus that killed 52 people, plus the four bombers.

Displayed prominently in the apartment were pictures of el-Amir's son, Mohamed Atta, the man who is believed to have piloted American Airlines Flight 11 into the north tower of the World Trade Center as part of the attacks on the United States.

El-Amir said the attacks in the United States and the July 7 attacks in London were the beginning of what would be a 50-year religious war, in which there would be many more fighters like his son.

He declared that terror cells around the world were a "nuclear bomb that has now been activated and is ticking."

The man, who gave his age as "at least 70," said he had no sorrow for what happened in London, and said there was a double standard in the way the world viewed the victims in London and victims in the Islamic world.

Cursing in Arabic, el-Amir also denounced Arab leaders and Muslims who condemned the London attacks as being traitors and non-Muslims.

He passionately vowed that he would do anything within his power to encourage more attacks.

When asked if he would allow a CNN crew to videotape another interview with him, el-Amir said he would give his permission -- for a price of $5,000.

That money, he said, would not be kept for himself, but would be donated to someone to carry out another terror attack.

El-Amir said that $5,000 was about how much it would cost to finance another attack in London.

CNN's crew refused to pay for the interview and left after el-Amir's request.

It is CNN policy not to pay people for interviews.

A lawyer by trade, el-Amir had a sign on his apartment door saying he was a consultant.

The security guard for the apartment building said el-Amir had been under surveillance by Egyptian agents for several months after the September 11 attacks, but no one had been watching him recently.

Burnt offerings on the altar of multiculturalism
07.19.05 (2:13 pm)   [edit]
Diana West

Without it -- without its fanatics who believe all civilizations are the same -- the engine that projects Islam into the unprotected heart of Western civilization would stall and fail. It's as simple as that. To live among the believers -- the multiculturalists -- is to watch the assault, the jihad, take place un-repulsed by our suicidal societies. These societies are not doomed to submit; rather, they are eager to do so in the name of a masochistic brand of tolerance that, short of drastic measures, is surely terminal.

I'm not talking about our soldiers, policemen, rescue workers and, now, even train conductors, who bravely and steadfastly risk their lives for civilization abroad and at home. Instead, I'm thinking about who we are as a society at this somewhat advanced stage of war. It is a strange, tentative civilization we have become, with leaders who strut their promises of "no surrender" even as they flinch at identifying the foe. Four years past 9/11, we continue to shadow-box "terror," even as we go on about "an ideology of hate." It's a script that smacks of sci-fi fantasy more than realpolitik. But our grim reality is no summer blockbuster, and there's no special-effects-enhanced plot twist that is going to thwart "terror" or "hate" in the London Underground anymore than it did on the roof of the World Trade Center. Or in the Bali nightclub. Or on the first day of school in Beslan. Or in any disco, city bus or shopping mall in Israel.

Body bags, burn masks and prosthetics are no better protections than make-believe. But these are our weapons, according to the powers that be. These, and an array of high-tech scopes and scanners designed to identify retinas and fingerprints, to detect explosives and metals -- ultimately, I presume, as we whisk through the automatic supermarket door. How strange, though, that even as we devise new ways to see inside ourselves to our most elemental components, we also prevent ourselves from looking full-face at the danger to our way of life posed by Islam.

Go ye, and read the rest.

Glenn Reynolds Copyrights the Word "Indeed," Threatens to Bill Much of Blogosphere Right out of Exi
07.19.05 (8:57 am)   [edit]
Oh no! We're dooooooomed!

Blogger Glenn Reynolds, better known as the Instapundit, announced at a press conference earlier today that he now holds the copyright to the word Indeed, following a prolonged but little reported court battle. The ruling, he claimed, was retroactive to the beginning of time.

"Anyone, anywhere who ever utters, prints, types or otherwise conveys the word Indeed, will need to pay me the sum of $5,000.00 per incident," spoke a grinning Reynolds between sips from a tall, cold glass of cocker spaniel. "Back billings for prior uses of the word Indeed are already being mailed out as we speak, along with various charges for accrued interest, court costs, and other fees incurred. We have started with the bloggers. I would strongly advise against any bloggers out there attempting to alter their blogs to remove any occurrences of the word Indeed from either their front page or their archives. My minions and I already have screen captures of everything any of you have ever published. Attempting to alter your websites will only result in the filing of criminal charges. Muwahahahaha!"

Victim ordered to wed rapist
07.19.05 (6:04 am)   [edit]
By Shaikh Azizur Rahman
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
July 19, 2005

BOMBAY -- Hard-line Islamic clerics in a northern Indian village have declared that a woman's 10-year-old marriage was nullified when her father-in-law raped her -- and ordered the mother of five to marry the rapist.

The fatwa, or religious edict, was issued by Darool Uloom Deoband, South Asia's most powerful Islamic theological school known for promoting a radical brand of Islam that is said to have inspired the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The decision has outraged both Muslim and Hindu leaders and prompted a fierce debate that has dominated the front pages of national newspapers across India.

The fatwa ordered Imrana Ilahi, 28, to separate from her husband and treat him as her son because she had sex with his father.

"She had a physical relationship with her father-in-law, and it nullifies her marriage," said Mohammad Masood Madani, a cleric at the theological school. He said it made no difference whether the sex was consensual or forced. The village council then decreed that Mrs. Ilahi would have to marry her father-in-law.

Feminists and liberal Muslims reacted with fury, staging nationwide street protests.

But Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh on June 29 supported the fatwa, saying: "The decision of the Muslim religious leaders in the Imrana case must have been taken after a lot of thought. ... The religious leaders are all very learned and they understand the Muslim community and its sentiments."

The rape took place June 4 in the village of Charthawal in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, when Mrs. Ilahi's husband, Noor Ilahi, was away.

When Mr. Ilahi, a brick kiln laborer, learned of the attack, the village court instructed him to divorce his wife.

But Mr. Ilahi, 32, told his wife: "My father is dirty and you are clean. I still love you and I cannot desert you." Mrs. Ilahi, with her husband and five children, sneaked out of Charthawal and took shelter in Kukra, the village of her parents.
Mrs. Ilahi received another rude shock when the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, the country's most influential Muslim umbrella organization, endorsed the punishment meted out by Darool Uloom Deoband.

"The fact that the woman was 'used' by her husband's blood relative makes her [unclean] for her husband and there is no way she can be allowed to live with him," the law board said.

Life on Planet Islam. Sounds great, doesn't it?

US Soldier shot in Chest by Enemy Sniper, Gets up, Captures sniper, then gives him aid

Media Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 5, 2005
RELEASE 20050705-01

256th BCT Soldier survives sniper attack
Spc. Chris Foster
256th Brigade Combat Team PAO

BAGHDAD -- Being able to react to and maintain control of a situation in a combat environment can be a difficult task for Soldiers. They must be able to quickly react and assess a situation, in order to ensure their survival and the safety of those around them.

“Stay alert, stay alive” is the reminder that is driven into the minds of Soldiers since the first day of basic training and echoes throughout their military careers.

This axiom was driven home for at least one Soldier on June 2. Pfc. Stephen Tschiderer, a native of Mendon, N.Y., and a medic with E Troop, 101st “Saber” Cavalry Division, attached to 3rd Battalion, 156th Infantry Regiment, 256th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, was shot in the chest by an enemy sniper, during a routine patrol in west Baghdad.

While Tschiderer was relaying information to the truck commander of his M114 Humvee, an enemy sniper team prepared to engage him from inside of a cushioned silver van being used as a mobile sniper’s nest. This nest was lined with numerous bed mattresses to muffle the sound of a Dragonoff sniper rifle fired through a hole just big enough for the shooter to engage his target of choice.

Tschiderer was knocked to the ground from the sudden impact of the sniper’s bullet. The bullet only seemed to have fazed this Soldier as, adrenaline pumping, he sprang right back up in order to take cover and locate the enemy’s position.

The sniper was unsuccessful in his mission, due to the stopping force of the Tschiderer’s daily wardrobe, his protective body armor, which saved his life.

“I knew I was hit, but was uncertain of the damage or location from the hit,” Tschiderer said. “The only thing that was going through my mind was to take cover and locate the sniper’s position.”

“The shot came from my 12 o’clock position from a silver van parked across an intersection about 75 meters from my location.” said Tschiderer.

After Tschiderer alerted his fellow Soldiers of the enemy location, they immediately began to pursue the terrorists.Due to his heroic actions and quick decisions, Tschiderer located the enemy while he took cover and alerted the rest of his team on patrol. As the Saber team engaged and disabled the sniper’s position, two terrorists fled on foot, leaving a blood trail that came from the wounds of the enemy sniper.

A cordon and search was immediately set up and Tschiderer assisted his team in the search of the two terrorists. The driver of the silver vehicle was detained by a team from B Co. 3-156th Inf. Bn. while Tschiderer and a team from B Company, 4th Battalion, 1st Iraqi Army Brigade, continued to follow the blood trail which led them to the yard where the wounded sniper lay in pain.

As Tschiderer secured the terrorist with a pair of handcuffs, he gave medical aid to the wounded terrorist—the same one who’d tried to take his life.

Yeah. American troops are depraved animals. /sarcasm

Dutch doctors adopt guidelines on mercy killing of newborns
07.15.05 (11:14 am)   [edit]
Tony Sheldon

Utrecht

Dutch paediatricians have voted unanimously to adopt as national guidelines the so called Groningen protocol that covers the mercy killing of newborn babies who are incurably sick and are suffering severely. The Dutch Paediatric Society accepted that "in exceptional circumstances and under strict conditions... deliberate ending of life" of such newborns "can be an acceptable option."

The protocol gives exact details of the requirements doctors must follow and includes the mandatory reporting of all cases. The local protocol drawn up at Groningen University Hospital last autumn caused an international outcry. Its clinical director of paediatrics, Eduard Verhagen, told the BMJ at the time, "It is time to be honest; all over the world doctors end lives discreetly, out of compassion".

The protocol, which the Groningen doctors agreed with the public prosecution service, enables doctors to report their actions without being prosecuted.

Its requirements include a clear diagnosis and prognosis; that the newborn baby must be suffering hopelessly and unbearably with no prospect for future treatment; that both parents must give their informed consent; that the decision must be confirmed by a second independent doctor; and that the death and treatment must be reported to the local coroner.

After the recent decision, Dr Verhagen, who chairs the society's ethics and law committee, said, "The society has agreed a clear and uniform approach to the decisions regarding deliberate life ending procedures in sick newborns." The "confirmation of the acceptability" of this practice was an important step for parents and doctors.

Stop Being Politically Correct
07.12.05 (12:56 pm)   [edit]
by: Shmuel Sackett
International Director of Manhigut Yehudit Tamuz 5765 (July, 05)

According to Arutz-7, British Prime Minister Tony Blair attributed the recent bombings in London "to the Arab-Israeli dispute and the lack of democracy in the Middle East."

The NY Daily News reported that British Member of Parliament George Galloway said it was due to "the daily destruction of Palestinian homes."

Now it's my turn to place the blame. The reason for the terror has nothing to do with Israel and everything to do with being politically correct. Thousands around the world have been killed and this trend will unfortunately continue as George beats around the bush and Tony blares out lies.

If these world leaders would be honest, they would give the exact reason for the bloodshed. They would put political correctness on the side and tell it like it is; Radical Islam has declared war against the Christian and Jewish world and will stop at nothing until all infidels (non-Moslems) have been destroyed.

It has nothing to do with the Palestinians.

It has nothing to do with democracy.

It even has nothing to do with the Middle East.

These beasts are not interested in the plight of their "brothers" in Gaza. If they did, they would have taken their oil billions and helped them long ago. They do not want land since this is a holy war (jihad) that has nothing to do with land. They want blood. Jewish blood (terror in Israel), American blood (World Trade Center), Spanish blood (Madrid) and now British blood.

Still, nobody dares say the truth. No world leader or even acknowledged journalist tells it like it is. They skirt the issue, blame the terror on "extremists" and invent enemies halfway across the world who might not even exist.

Until the truth is told, the terror will continue. All of Bush's horses and all of Blair's men will never put safety in our lives back again. Soldiers can -- and will -- patrol the LIRR, Metro North, Amtrak and London Tube but they will not succeed.

Here is what must be done: While talking about global warming and African poverty is nice and helpful, the leaders of the G-8 must stand firm and declare an all-out war on Radical Islam. Not Taliban cavemen, Al-Qaeda freedom fighters or Iraqi insurgents but radical Moslems worldwide. Mosques where violence is encouraged and Islamic schools where hatred is taught must be immediately closed down. Moslem leaders -- and their followers -- who applaud murder and suicide bombers must be evicted from our countries and returned to their own lands. These people are potential dangers to our free world and we cannot live by their side. They follow a religion of hate and bloodshed. If you don't believe me, spend five minutes listening to them and how they interpret the Koran, and then tell me if you want them as your neighbors.

This, of course, will never be done since it sounds horrible and unfair. The fact that it will solve the problem is not important. In today's world, things must not only be good... they must also look good and declaring an international war against radical Islam does not foot that bill.

So, get used to the terror. Get used to riding the busses and trains in fear. Get used to gory headlines and blood filled news reports and hope and pray it doesn't include anybody you know. The only way to solve this problem is to remove the word "politically" from "politically correct". Only then will we finally win the war on terror.

He gets it.

WE CANNOT SURRENDER
07.12.05 (8:29 am)   [edit]
States which shelter these killers will know no peace
By Christopher Hitchens

SOMEWHERE around London at about a quarter to nine yesterday morning, there must have been people turning on their TV and radio sets with a look of wolfish expectation.

I hope and believe that they were disappointed in what they got. There just wasn't quite enough giggle-value for the psychopath.

It must have been infernal underneath King's Cross, but above ground no panic, no screaming, no wailing and beating the air, no yells for vengeance.

I'm writing this in the early aftermath, but I would be willing to bet there will have been little or no bloody foolishness, either: no random attacks on mosques or shops or individuals. After all, devices on our buses and tubes are an open proclamation that the perpetrators don't care if they kill Muslims. Which, of course, is part of the point. When we use the weak and vague word "terrorism" we imply indiscriminate cruelty directed at civilians.

"Sadism" or "fascism" or "nihilism" would do just as nicely: all the venom that lurks just on the sub-human level of the human species.

In a tightly interwoven society, all that this poison has to do is ally itself with a certain low cunning.

People are afraid of plane crashes and of heights: in that sense 9/11 was the perfect strike on the collective unconscious. People are likewise afraid of fire and of crowded or subterranean conditions: the mind of the fascist is naturally attuned to exploit such dreads. I am guessing the planners of this coordinated atrocity hoped for more mayhem than they got, but the casualty figures are in a sense beside the point.

WE all knew this was coming, and that one day a homely and familiar name like Tavistock Square would become a synonym for barbarism. The good old red London bus, a worldwide symbol of our capital, ripped to shards in an instant.

Random and "senseless" though such violence may appear, we also all know it expresses a deadly ideology; indeed that in some ways it is that ideology.

The preachers of this faith have taken care to warn us that they love death more than we love life. Their wager is that this makes them unstoppable. Well, we shall have to see. They certainly cannot prove their point unless we assist them in doing so.

My American friends have been impressed by the composure of the Londoners they have seen on the screen: I bet London Transport runs again rather sooner than US airlines resumed flying after 9/11.

I remember living in London through the Provisional IRA bombing in the 70s. I saw the very first car-bomb explode against the Old Bailey in 1972. There was no warning that time, but after a while a certain etiquette developed.

And, even as I detested the people who might have just as soon have blown me up as anyone else, I was aware there were ancient disputes involved, and that there was a potential political solution.

Nothing of the sort applies in this case. We know very well what the "grievances" of the jihadists are.

The grievance of seeing unveiled women. The grievance of the existence, not of the State of Israel, but of the Jewish people. The grievance of the heresy of democracy, which impedes the imposition of sharia law. The grievance of a work of fiction written by an Indian living in London. The grievance of the existence of black African Muslim farmers, who won't abandon lands in Darfur. The grievance of the existence of homosexuals. The grievance of music, and of most representational art. The grievance of the existence of Hinduism. The grievance of East Timor's liberation from Indonesian rule. All of these have been proclaimed as a licence to kill infidels or apostates, or anyone who just gets in the way.

FOR a few moments yesterday, Londoners received a taste of what life is like for the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, whose Muslim faith does not protect them from slaughter at the hands of those who think they are not Muslim enough, or are the wrong Muslim.

It is a big mistake to believe this is an assault on "our" values or "our" way of life. It is, rather, an assault on all civilisation. I know perfectly well there are people thinking, and even saying, that Tony Blair brought this upon us by his alliance with George Bush.

A word of advice to them: try and keep it down, will you? Or wait at least until the funerals are over. And beware of the non-sequitur: you can be as opposed to the Iraq operation as much as you like, but you can't get from that "grievance" to the detonating of explosives at rush hour on London buses and tubes.

Don't even try to connect the two. By George Galloway's logic, British squaddies in Iraq are the root cause of dead bodies at home. How can anyone bear to be so wicked and stupid? How can anyone bear to act as a megaphone for psychotic killers?

The grievances I listed above are unappeasable, one of many reasons why the jihadists will lose.

They demand the impossible - the cessation of all life in favour of prostration before a totalitarian vision. Plainly, we cannot surrender. There is no one with whom to negotiate, let alone capitulate.

We shall track down those responsible. States that shelter them will know no peace. Communities that shelter them do not take forever to discover their mistake. And their sordid love of death is as nothing compared to our love of London, which we will defend as always, and which will survive this with ease.

Fight on, brothers and sisters.

Gaza mosque welcomes London attacks
07.12.05 (7:45 am)   [edit]
Preacher welcomes the “blessed acts” that took place recently in Iraq and Britain; highlights their proximity to selection of Olympic host for 2012 games
By Roee Nahimas

GAZA - In a reaction similar to the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks in New York, the blood spilt in the London terror attacks has been celebrated within the Palestinian territories.

The Gaza based Sut Al Quds radio station, which identifies itself with Palestinian Islamic Jihad, has praised the London terrorist atrocities.

The broadcast was carried live on Saturday evening, two days after the attack.

The radio station was broadcasting a sermon, in which a preacher was inciting listeners against Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

The preacher criticized Israel’s planned Gaza withdrawal, saying that Jerusalem was not part of the program.

The Palestinian Authority was described as vile for opening up a casino in Jericho.

Also in the same broadcast, Osama Bin Laden was praised, while the succession of explosions in London were welcomed.

The preacher welcomed the “blessed acts” that took place recently in Iraq and Britain, and highlighted their proximity to the selection of an Olympic host for the 2012 games.

“The sounds of happiness were heard in London, and Osama Bin Laden came and redrew the map. He made sure that the voice of the surrendered will be heard in every place,” the mosque's preacher said.

The sermon was translated by the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center , which emphasized that mosques under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority routinely incited for murder, and were being used by a variety of organizations with no effective supervision by the Authority.

Muslim scholar: Killing civilians OK

Head of Islamic center in London responds to attack

Responding to questions about the terrorist attack on London, a Muslim scholar in the British capital asserted Islam makes no distinction between civilians and military targets.

"The term 'civilians' does not exist in Islamic religious law," said Hani Al-Siba'i, head of the Al-Maqreze Centre for Historical Studies in London.

Al-Siba'i, in an interview with the Arab news channel al-Jazeera, elaborated, "There is no such term as 'civilians' in the modern Western sense. People are either of Dar Al-Harb or not."

Dar Al-Harb refers to the Muslim concept of the world being divided into two "houses," the House of Islam and the remaining territories, the House of War, or Dar Al-Harb.

Al-Siba'i speculated that a Western nation could have been responsible for the attack, but he acknowledged it could have been carried out by Osama bin Laden's terrorist organization, according to a transcript provided by the Middle East Media Research Institute, or MEMRI.

Con artists target phone system for deaf (Small Business ALERT!)
07.11.05 (10:55 am)   [edit]
Internet relay services being abused, operators say

By Bob Sullivan
Technology correspondent
MSNBC
Updated: 4:15 p.m. ET April 20, 2004

It was designed to help the hard of hearing have full access to America's telephone system, and hailed as an equal opportunity success story. But some say it's now become a favorite tool among international con artists trying to bilk U.S. merchants out of millions of dollars.

Max Andrews' story is typical. He figures his small bridal shop in Dothan, Ala., has been involved in most of the tiny town's weddings for the last 35 years. The boutique, which only has a one-page Web site, never had any designs on international clientele. Still, Andrews Bridal Shop received a surprising $5,500 order four weeks ago. The customer wanted 10 identical wedding gowns shipped to Lagos City, Nigeria, immediately. And that wasn't the only surprise.

The customer, most certainly a con artist, was posing as a deaf person, taking advantage of a publicly-funded tool designed to let hearing impaired people use America's phone systems. Hiding behind a so-called "relay operator," a telecommunications employee who acts as a go-between when a deaf person calls a hearing person, the caller tried to use six different stolen credit card numbers to pay for the purchase. And by using the relay system paid for by American consumers, the con artist didn't even have to pay for a pricey international call.

Telephone operators who help the deaf use the Internet to make phone calls say the system is being overrun by con artists trying to cheat American merchants.

Starting two years ago, companies like MCI and AT&T began offering free calls to the hearing-impaired through Internet Web pages. Hard of hearing consumers type their messages into dialog boxes similar to those used in Internet chat rooms; on the other end of the line, a relay operator reads the text, places the call, and verbalizes the text for the call recipient.

Relay services date back to the 1960s; their use became widespread in the 1990s, after they were mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. But in their initial form, they required callers to lug around keyboards known as TTY devices in order to place calls. In 2002, several companies launched the Internet equivalent of the service, called IP relay, which is much easier to use and more widely available. Both systems are still in place.

Either way, there is no cost to the caller. Costs are covered by the Telecommunications Relay Service Fund, collected via a small fee long-distance companies pay for every minute of service they sell.

Relay service has been hailed as a success by the deaf community. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, they give those who are hard of hearing equal access to America's vast telephone network.

But the system also offers that same free access to criminals looking to cheat U.S. merchants. The Internet-based relay system lets con artists call for free, even from far away places like Nigeria. It also helps disguise a caller's broken English, which in some cases could be a scam tip-off, and adds an air of sympathy to the call that might make otherwise suspicious merchants drop their guard.

It's not clear how widespread the problem is. Both MCI and AT&T concede con artists have used their systems, but say their impact is limited. MCI spokeswoman Natasha Haubold said scams impact about 1 percent of their system's calls -- down from 2 percent last year, when the company began implementing tighter security controls. AT&T refused to discuss the prevalence of the calls.

'Unbelievably frustrating'
But operators who work at the call centers paint a different picture. Some claim they spend half their day relaying calls placed by con artists. Adding to their frustration: operators must pledge complete secrecy as to the content of the phone calls. Otherwise, people would be suspicious of the service. So when a criminal calls in, the operators must relay the call without interfering.

"It was so unbelievably frustrating. ... It was pure evil. Enough to make anyone snap," said Robert Grodevant, a former operator who resigned in frustration from MCI's service in March. He says that one day, he participated in $40,000 worth of scam calls. "You'd be saying to yourself, 'No, don't do it. Just hang up.' But there was nothing you could do."

Frustrated operators regularly vent their complaints anonymously -- and discuss ways to foil the con artists -- on various Internet forums. They also claim the dramatic increase in con artist calls helped cause a revenue shortfall faced by the relay service fund earlier this year.

In February, the Federal Communications Commission conceded that the Telecommunications Relay Service Fund was in danger of running out of money, thanks in part to skyrocketing demand for the Internet relay service. To raise an additional $55 million and keep relay services operating through June, fees that fund the service were raised nearly 50 percent.

Officials at the National Exchange Carrier Association, which administers the relay service fund for the FCC, were unavailable for comment.

I was not aware of this type of fraud until it happened where I work. Fortunately, the manager being relay called contacted me, and I was able to stop it before we were out anything. Even turned it into the FBI, and they were very interested...

UPDATE: 7/12/05
I've been speaking with the Counter-Terrorism branch of the FBI. Through a little research, I was able to trace the IP of an e-mail sent to us by the scammer. It appears he's using a satellite internet connection in Petach Tikva, Israel.

Petah-Tikva (פתח-תקוה, also transliterated as Petach Tikva, Petaḥ Tiqwa or Petach Tiqwa) is a city in the west of the Center District of Israel Israel, north-east of Tel Aviv. Petah-Tikva is the second largest industrialised city in Israel (after Haifa). As of 2003 its population was 173,700.

More as it develops.

Vitamins to be Banned Worldwide...
07.06.05 (10:28 am)   [edit]
Opinion by Consumer Advocate Tim Bolen

Monday, July 4th, 2005

"Big Pharma" won a major victory in Rome, Italy today. Vitamins and minerals, for over-the-counter sale will be phased out, almost completely, in every country on Planet Earth. The "German Model" of health care will now be the law of the land - in every land.

Below is a press release from Diane Miller JD of the National Health Freedom Coalition, detailing the action. Diane is in Rome at the meeting.

Press Release - National Health Freedom Coalition: Codex Full Commission adopts Codex Guidelines for Vitamin and Mineral Food Supplements in final form July 4, 2005, Rome Italy. by Diane Miller JD.

Minutes ago the full Commission of Codex Alimentarius adopted in final form, the Codex Guidelines for Vitamin and Mineral Food Supplements. This adoption is the Step 8 adoption, the final stage of adoption for the international Codex guidelines. The Codex Vitamin and Mineral Food Supplements guidelines are now official and no longer in draft form.

The Commission, attended by over 85 of the 171 Codex countries, adopted the guidelines by consensus method. There was brief discussion before adoption taking in comments from a small number of countries and two NGOs.

Australia requested adding the word "only" in Section 1.3 bertwee the words "apply" and "in". The sentence would then read "These guidelines apply only in those jurisdictions where products defined in 2.1 are regulated as foods."

Australia's comments were followed by request from Venzuela and Spain to clarify the spanish translation.

Venezuela was followed by China. China stated that every government in making decisions about vitamins and minerals should take into account the dietary limitations of their own countries, that governments can select vitamins and minerals acocording to the customs and habits of their country. China also pointed out that there should be definitions of the sources of vitamins.

Columbia spoke up and commented that Vitamins and Minerals are intended for deficiencies and are recommended for health reasons and said that there has to be no exaggerated use of minerals.

Egypt commented and offered a clarification saying that vitamin and minerals can be considered if daily needs are not being met.

After the countries were heard, the Chairman recognized NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations). National Health Federation (NHF) a world wide consumer organization with NGO status at Codex was recognized to speak. Attonery Scott Tipps of NHF stood and requested the guidelines not be adopted but rather be sent back to commitee for 3 important reasons. 1) According to Codex rules a "purpose" statement must be part of all guidelines adopted and the Vitamin and Mineral guidelines did not contain a purpose. Secondly, the guidelines did not define vitamin and mineral and therefore it is unclear as to what is being regulated. And lastly, he pointed out that the Chinese comments were substantive and according to Codex rules on page 27 of the procedural manual, a substantive amendment request should be addressed at the committee level. His comments were heard.

The NGO IADSA was then recognized. IADSA stressed the fact that the draft guidelines should be adopted because they had been worked on in committee for near 10 years and that valuable consensus had been reached in the Bonn Germany committee meeting and the guidelines should now be passed.

After all comments, the Chair, consulted with counsel to assess whether the addition of the word "only" would change the meaning of the sentence. After learning that it would not he consulted with Australia and Australia repeated their request for amendment. The Chair recommended adoption of the amendment and there was no dissent. Then the Chair recommended the guidelines be adopted at Stage 8 in their final form and that China submit their substantive amendment requests to the committee at their next meeting. There was no further comment or dissent from any country and the guidelines were adopted.

What this means, in the United States, is that as soon as CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) passes the House of Representatives (it has already passed the Senate), the US government will be forced, by the terms of that CAFTA agreement, to restrict vitamin and supplement sales in accordance with the "German Model" of health care.

If and when this happens, the hard won 1994 DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act) will be nullified, and the dismantling of the North American supplement Industry will begin.

However, it is not inevitable - the use of "supplements" and other "alternatives" to conventional medicine regimens represents over fifty percent (50%) of the total US health dollar spent annually. Eighty-eight percent (88%) of US adults use an "alternative," and believe in them. Opposition is already gearing up for the battle - (click here).

This is a battle between "We the People," and the free world's biggest, and worst, enemy - ever - "Big Pharma."

Stay tuned...

On the Iranian Movement of "Martyrdom Seekers"
07.06.05 (10:09 am)   [edit]
The following are excerpts from a report about the movement of "martyrdom seekers" in Iran. Al-Arabiya TV aired this report on July 2, 2005.

Martyrdom-seeking movement member Vesaly: My name is Vesaly... We are first and foremost Muslims and it is our duty to defend our brothers and sisters throughout the world. We don't need permission from anybody. This has to do with our religious duty and responsibilities. This is our choice, and we have no fear. We adhere to the legacy of our late leader, Imam Khomeini.

Crowd: There is no God but Allah. There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is Allah's messenger.

Reporter: These young women have forsaken the temptations of life, and have taken the hard way. Indeed, they have chosen martyrdom as a way of liberating the Islamic lands. This is what they say.

40,000 time bombs in Iran - this is the number of volunteers so far, and the registration is still open. There is no distinction between men and women, Sunnis or Shiites. "We all sacrifice for the sake of Islam," they chant. This is the movement of martyrdom seekers, whose goals and organizational structure are still unclear. They refused to give further details, but did not conceal their determination to sacrifice their lives. The reason - what America has done in the holy places of Najaf and Karbala.

Firooz Rajai, a movement leader : In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate. The movement of martyrdom seekers began after the American campaign against Najaf and Karbala in Iraq over a year ago. The religious scholars decided that such a movement should be established in this country, whose majority are Shiites, in order to support their brothers, especially following the experience of the war that was forced on Iran by the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq.

Reporter: This is a symbolic grave of the first man who tried to get rid of Salman Rushdi. Here, there are also symbolic graves commemorating the people who killed hundreds of American and French soldiers in Lebanon, in 1983.

This young mother from Palestine, who sacrificed her life and blew herself up at an Israeli checkpost, is a role model for the movement's members, who believe this is the only way to liberate the Palestinian lands, and especially the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Firooz Rajai : In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate. We will not allow the Zionists to build their Solomon Temple in the place where the Al-Aqsa Mosque stands. They have not succeeded so far, and they never will. We are willing to sacrifice our bodies and souls to defend the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Our goal is to achieve martyrdom by way of true Jihad. This is the true path to which we strive. We don't need a fatwa on this, since we get our fatwas from the Koran and from all the authorities on Islamic law. We vow to turn into bombs that will explode at anyone who wishes to desecrate our holy places.

Reporter: The movement denies any connection to the Iranian government, and considers itself an independent organization. Although the government occasionally expresses reservations about the movement of martyrdom seekers and its operations, the movement has used government buildings for its training, and some Revolutionary Guards members have publicly defended them.

Iranian MP Hamid-Reza Haji-Babai: Martyrdom seekers may exist in every country, and in Iran, they have beliefs that they hold sacred. This is a popular movement, which cannot take the form of an organization. Iran has so far managed, in a democratic and diplomatic way, to maintain relations with all countries, and preserve its status, despite the American hostility. The American oppressive, inhuman, and undemocratic behavior in recent years has led to the creation of martyrdom-seeking movements everywhere.

Reporter: After receiving theory lessons, the volunteers undergo secret training, far from the media. Even though the movement's leaders refrain from disclosing what kind of activities are included in this training, they emphasize that this is not a military organization, and that no special or complex training is required – A few days are enough to train the volunteers.

Firooz Rajai : So far, we have not sent any brigade out of the countr
