Summary It is now clear that Rightists are not opposed to change but that "Western" Leftists seek it eagerly -- so attitude to social change is the defining characteristic of the political Left rather than of the political Right. Rightism ("conservatism") and Leftism are not opposites or mirror images, however, so Rightists in general are neither for nor against change. The archetypal Leftist in the economically successful "Western" democracies (a "liberal" in contemporary North American terms) is a keen advocate of change not for its own sake but rather to fulfil his/her ego needs -- needs for self-advertisement, self-promotion, excitement, influence and ultimately power. Leftists/liberals do nonetheless dislike neo-liberal (pro-market) change because it threatens their access to power. The old Soviet system showed that, once they have gained power, Leftists suddenly become very opposed to change. Change is just an instrument they use to gain their ultimate goal of power. And why is power sought so single-mindedly? Why the single-minded egotism? At its deepest level, Leftism appears to be psychopathic -- with the psychopathic disregard for all norms, morals, standards and ethics in the ruthless quest for personal praise and satisfaction. It is because of their quest for power that Leftists come into conflict with conservatives. History shows that what has always motivated conservatives is resistance to government power -- in particular government encroachment on individual rights and liberties. So conservatives may either favour or oppose change to promote that cause. A description of the political attitude domain in terms of two dimensions rather than a single Left/Right dimension is rejected on both empirical and theoretical grounds. The pervasiveness and evolutionary origins of egotism and reality denial generally are also briefly considered. Ouch. | Teaneck Firemen Told To Remove 9/11 Stickers |

Aug 25, 2005 6:34 am US/Eastern (1010 WINS) (TEANECK, N.J.) Teaneck firefighters have been told to remove stickers -- even the ones remembering nine-eleven -- from their helmets. Township Manager Helene Fall says the policy does not permit personal adornments on township property and prevents employees from wearing anything that might be considered offensive. The only thing that is permitted is an American flag sticker that the township provided. Teaneck fire officers union president Mike Hunter tells The Record of Bergen County the order is ridiculous. Many of the firefighters helped search through debris at ground zero after the terrorist attacks. Marc Morano Senior Staff Writer Washington (CNSNews.com) - The Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., the current home of hundreds of wounded veterans from the war in Iraq, has been the target of weekly anti-war demonstrations since March. The protesters hold signs that read "Maimed for Lies" and "Enlist here and die for Halliburton." The anti-war demonstrators, who obtain their protest permits from the Washington, D.C., police department, position themselves directly in front of the main entrance to the Army Medical Center, which is located in northwest D.C., about five miles from the White House. Among the props used by the protesters are mock caskets, lined up on the sidewalk to represent the death toll in Iraq. Code Pink Women for Peace, one of the groups backing anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan's vigil outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford Texas, organizes the protests at Walter Reed as well. Some conservative supporters of the war call the protests, which have been ignored by the establishment media, "shameless" and have taken to conducting counter-demonstrations at Walter Reed. "[The anti-war protesters] should not be demonstrating at a hospital. A hospital is not a suitable location for an anti-war demonstration," said Bill Floyd of the D.C. chapter of FreeRepublic.com, who stood across the street from the anti-war demonstrators on Aug. 19. "I believe they are tormenting our wounded soldiers and they should just leave them alone," Floyd added. According to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, nearly 4,000 individuals involved in the Iraq war were treated at the facility as of March of this year, 1,050 of whom were wounded in battle. One anti-war protester, who would only identify himself as "Luke," told Cybercast News Service that "the price of George Bush's foreign policy can be seen right here at Walter Reed -- young men who returned from Iraq with their bodies shattered after George Bush sent them to war for a lie." Luke accused President Bush of "exploiting American soldiers" while "oppressing the other nations of earth." The president "has killed far too many people," he added. On Aug. 19, as the anti-war protesters chanted slogans such as "George Bush kills American soldiers," Cybercast News Service observed several wounded war veterans entering and departing the gates of Walter Reed, some with prosthetic limbs. Most of the demonstrations have been held on Friday evenings, a popular time for the family members of wounded soldiers to visit the hospital. But the anti-war activists were unapologetic when asked whether they considered such signs as "Maimed for Lies" offensive to wounded war veterans and their families. "I am more offended by the fact that many were maimed for life. I am more offended by the fact that they (wounded veterans) have been kept out of the news," said Kevin McCarron, a member of the anti-war group Veterans for Peace. The draft memo includes suggestions from White House communications staff, followed by several paragraphs apparently handwritten by the president. While handwriting experts from CBS News continue to pore over the document to verify its authenticity, here is the text of the president's alleged response to the grieving Mom whose protest has captured the hearts of America's journalists. Dear Mrs. Sheehan, You have asked me to identify the noble cause for which your son died. I have not answered you personally out of respect for the nobility of your son's sacrifice. Being president forces me into the spotlight, but I would rather stand in the shadows of men like Casey Sheehan. Directing national attention on my response to your protest creates a distraction from what matters. The focus of our attention, and our admiration, should rest on people like Casey Sheehan, who stand in the breach when evil threatens to break out and consume a helpless people. The running story on the news networks should be the valiant efforts of our troops -- the merchants of mercy who export freedom and import honor. They trade their own lives for the sake of others. As a result, we live in a nation where a woman can camp outside of the president's house and verbally attack the president for weeks on end without fear of prison, torture or death. And the number of nations where such protest is possible has multiplied thanks to the work of our military. You ask for what noble cause your son died? In a sense he died so that people like you, who passionately oppose government policies, can freely express that opposition. As you camp in Crawford, you should take off your shoes, for you stand on holy ground. This land was bought with the blood of men like your son. Now, 25 million Iraqis cry out to enjoy the life you take for granted. Most of them will never use their freedom to denigrate the sacrifice of those who paid for it. But once liberty is enshrined in law, they will be free to do so. And when the Iraqis finally escape their incarceration, hope will spread throughout that enslaved region of the world, eventually making us all safer and more free. The key is in the lock of the prison door. Bold men risk everything to turn it. Mrs. Sheehan, everyone dies. But few experience the bittersweet glory of death with a purpose -- death that sets people free and produces ripples of liberty hundreds of years into the future. Casey Sheehan died that freedom might triumph over bondage, hope over despair, prosperity over misery. He died restoring justice and mercy. The Saudi government’s decision to demolish the home of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to make way for the Jabal Omar Scheme, a project consisting of a parking lot, two 50-storey hotel towers and seven 35-storey apartment blocks, has evoked no response from the Muslim world. This is surprising, to say the least. The only voice that has been raised against the project is that of Saudi architect Dr Sami Angawi, who according to news reports, is on a one-man campaign against the very idea. Interestingly, the project is in the vicinity of the Grand Mosque. There are two broad aspects to be considered. While one relates to religion, the other is underscored by history and culture. Let’s consider both. Denominationally, Saudi Arabia practices Wahhabism, a ghair-muqallid (non-imitative) creed that does not follow the four recognised schools of Islamic fiqh. Its founder Abdul Wahhab stressed the need to return to the purity of religion. In practice, this has meant a rejection of history. In the centuries between Wahhab’s time and the time of the Prophet (pbuh), many bida’s (innovations) came to be injected into Islam. According to Wahab, these had to be eliminated in order to restore Islam to its pristine, ideological purity and glory. Not surprisingly, this emphasis on purity has led to debates over various issues at the micro level: graves cannot be bricked because tombs can be used by people of feeble faith for worship, which is shirk (worshipping anyone but one Allah); pictures are not allowed; mysticism is bida’; music is banned, and so on. In the early 1920s, the Saudis bulldozed and levelled a major part of Jannat-ul Baqi’, a graveyard in Medina that housed the graves of the family and companions of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). They did not finish the job because there was much protest in the Muslim world over the project. But today no voice has been raised against the Saudi government’s decision because Wahhabism has penetrated deeply into the Sunnis. One of the most ironic developments following the rise of Islamist groups is that even Sunnis — for instance Deobandis in South and West Asia who follow the Hanafi fiqh — are part of the Salafist (from Islaaf — forefathers) phenomenon that used to distinguish Wahhabis from those Sunnis that followed any of the four schools of jurisprudence. Increasingly, Islam in the Muslim world is manifesting symptoms of Wahhabism. NEW YORK, New York --- Osama bin Laden, long thought to be hiding in Pakistan or Afghanistan, is now thought to have been hiding out in the newsroom at CNN. The savvy news veteran has apparently been a senior editor at CNN for over two years, but slipped away before FBI agents could apprehend him. The FBI is keeping an eye on other known al Qaeda cells, like The New York Times, CBS and NPR to see if bin Laden surfaces there. "He was actually hoping to end the war on terrorism by producing anti-American and anti-military news stories," said one FBI agent. "Unfortunately for him, no one noticed a difference in the programming at CNN after he joined. He was only discovered when he was reprimanded for producing a news story that called Iraqi terrorists 'insurgents' instead of 'freedom fighters'. He snapped and cut off his supervisor's head. We're hot on his trail and trying track him down. He was going by the name Mohammed Mohammed." "I can't believe Mohammed Mohammed was really bin Laden," said one of Osama's former co-workers at CNN. KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court sentenced a man to life imprisonment for writing an allegedly blasphemous book about the Quran and the Islamic justice system, a lawyer said on Friday. Police arrested 40-year-old writer Younis Sheikh early this year in Karachi after he brought out the book called ‘Shaitan Maulvi’ (Satanic Cleric). “The court has sent him into jail for life as he described the four Imams as Jews in his book,” public prosecutor Naimat Ali Randhawa said after the court in Karachi sentenced the man on Thursday. The four Imams were the third generation interpreters of the religion after Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and their views on law are widely respected by the world’s Muslims, he said. Nizhni Novgorod, August 5, Interfax - Umar Idrisiv, head of the Muslim Board in the Nizhni Novgorod Region, made an appeal to stone the participants in the gay parade in case it is conducted in Moscow. ‘Homosexuals need to be stoned. I believe the propagation of homosexuality and other such like phenomena is a sign of the doomsday approaching’, Idrisov said as cited at the web-site of the Union of Muslim Journalists. The mufti emphasized that ‘we will never come to an agreement with homosexuals’, even if the state authorities allow them to conduct a march of gays and lesbians. ‘Let the state deal with it. But we will always oppose it morally and intellectually’, Idrisov stressed, describing homosexuality as ‘the greatest sin leading to the end of world’. ‘Allah destroyed the nations who did such things. By Cliff Kincaid | August 12, 2005 Liberal media bias is a fact of life. But when the issue involves the business of journalism, the bias gets so bad as to be deliberately dishonest. Consider the slanted coverage of the recent Senate Judiciary hearing into a proposed federal media shield law. The bill would shield the media from identifying their sources in criminal and certain national security cases. On July 20, Washington Post media reporter Howard Kurtz wrote a story about a hearing that waited until the ninth paragraph to disclose that the Washington Post was one of the "news giants" supporting the bill. Kurtz noted that Deputy Attorney General James B. Comey Jr.'s opposition to the bill was "a disappointment to lawmakers and news media advocates who have been negotiating with Justice officials and this week scaled back the bill to meet administration objections." What are "news media advocates?" That's a new term describing behind-the-scenes lobbyists for Big Media companies. Can you imagine reporters referring to lobbyists for the nuclear power industry as "energy advocates?" Kurtz also reported, "Scheduled witnesses at today's hearing include Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper, who narrowly avoided jail by testifying last week in the Valerie Plame leak investigation, and Time Inc. Editor in Chief Norman Pearlstine, who surrendered Cooper's notes in the case after losing in the courts." This was true, but he didn't tell the full story. We did. In a press release, we noted that AIM, the nation's oldest media watchdog group, was denied an opportunity to testify at the hearing and that the witnesses were stacked 9-0 in favor of the bill. Comey was scheduled to appear and provide testimony against the media shield legislation, mainly on national security grounds. But he had a scheduling conflict and had to submit his testimony in writing. If he had appeared, the hearing would have been stacked "only" 9-1. "Far more dangerously, it would cover criminal or terrorist organizations that also have media operations, including many foreign terrorist organizations, such as al Qaeda (which, from its founding, maintained a media office that published a newsletter). Indeed, the inherent difficulty of appropriately defining a 'covered person' in a world in which the very definition of 'media' is constantly evolving, suggests yet another fundamental weakness in the bill. What could be shielded here is not so much the traditional media-which already is protected adequately by existing Justice Department guidelines-as criminal activity deliberately or fortuitously using means or facilities in the course of the offenses that would cause the perpetrators to fall within the definition of the media under the bill." The Post wasn't the only news organization that failed to cover the hearing objectively. In fact, the Kurtz story was better than most, since he at least mentioned how his employer backed the shield law. Other news organizations completely ignored how the Big Media were backing the bill. On July 20, the CBS News website ran an AP story about the hearing. The story failed to disclose that CBS is one of the media companies supporting the bill. On the same day, the Los Angeles Times ran a story by Johanna Neuman about how Comey had submitted testimony to that hearing opposing the shield bill. She reported, "Some 80 media groups have formed a coalition to support a shield law to prevent other reporters from going to jail." But she failed to report that the Tribune Company, which owns the L.A. Times, was one of them. The New York Times ran a story the same day about the hearing. Reporter Maria Newman failed, however, to mention that the New York Times Company is one of the media organizations supporting the bill. The Washington Post website ran a separate story about the hearing on its website on June 21 from Bloomberg news. The story failed to mention that the Washington Post supports the bill. The website of Fox News ran a July 20 story about the hearing. It failed to mention that News Corporation, the parent company of Fox News, supports the bill. CNN ran a story about the hearing. It, too, failed to mention that CNN supports the bill. Get the picture? By Jean Pearce FrontPageMagazine.com | May 25, 2004 As the 9/11 Commission tries to uncover what kept intelligence agencies from preventing September 11, it has overlooked two vital factors: Jamie Gorelick and Bill Clinton. Gorelick, who has browbeaten the current administration, helped erect the walls between the FBI, CIA and local investigators that made 9/11 inevitable. However, she was merely expanding the policy Bill Clinton established with Presidential Decision Directive 24. What has been underreported is why the policy came about: to thwart investigations into the Chinese funding of Clinton’s re-election campaign, and the favors he bestowed on them in return. In April, CNSNews.com staff writer Scott Wheeler reported that a senior U.S. government official and three other sources claimed that the 1995 memo written by Jamie Gorelick, who served as the Clinton Justice Department’s deputy attorney general from 1994 to 1997, created "a roadblock" to the investigation of illegal Chinese donations to the Democratic National Committee. But the picture is much bigger than that. The Gorelick memo, which blocked intelligence agents from sharing information that could have halted the September 11 hijacking plot, was only the mortar in a much larger maze of bureaucratic walls whose creation Gorelick personally oversaw. It’s a story the 9/11 Commission may not want to hear, and one that Gorelick – now incredibly a member of that commission – has so far refused to tell. But it is perhaps the most crucial one to understanding the intentional breakdown of intelligence that led to the September 11 disaster. Nearly from the moment Gorelick took office in the Clinton Justice Department, she began acting as the point woman for a large-scale bureaucratic reorganization of intelligence agencies that ultimately placed the gathering of intelligence, and decisions about what – if anything – would be done with it under near-direct control of the White House. In the process, more than a dozen CIA and FBI investigations underway at the time got caught beneath the heel of the presidential boot, investigations that would ultimately reveal massive Chinese espionage as millions in illegal Chinese donations filled Democratic Party campaign coffers. When Gorelick took office in 1994, the CIA was reeling from the news that a Russian spy had been found in CIA ranks, and Congress was hungry for a quick fix. A month after Gorelick was sworn in, Bill Clinton issued Presidential Decision Directive 24. PDD 24 put intelligence gathering under the direct control of the president’s National Security Council, and ultimately the White House, through a four-level, top-down chain of command set up to govern (that is, stifle) intelligence sharing and cooperation between intelligence agencies. From the moment the directive was implemented, intelligence sharing became a bureaucratic nightmare that required negotiating a befuddling bureaucracy that stopped directly at the President’s office. First, the directive effectively neutered the CIA by creating a National Counterintelligence Center (NCI) to oversee the Agency. NCI was staffed by an FBI agent appointed by the Clinton administration. It also brought multiple international investigations underway at the time under direct administrative control. The job of the NCI was to “implement counterintelligence activities,” which meant that virtually everything the CIA did, from a foreign intelligence agent’s report to polygraph test results, now passed through the intelligence center that PDD 24 created. NCI reported to an administration-appointed National Counterintelligence Operations Board (NCOB) charged with “discussing counterintelligence matters.” The NCOB in turn reported to a National Intelligence Policy Board, which coordinated activities between intelligence agencies attempting to work together. The policy board reported “directly” to the president through the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. The result was a massive bureaucratic roadblock for the CIA – which at the time had a vast lead on the FBI in foreign intelligence – and for the FBI itself, which was also forced to report to the NCOB. This hampered cooperation between the two entities. All this occurred at a time when both agencies were working separate ends of investigations that would eventually implicate China in technology transfers and the Democratic Party in a Chinese campaign cash grab. Islamic law is coming to the University of Toronto. Not in the form of sharia tribunals for cheaters or strict dress codes for female students, but in the form of two professors hired to teach the subject at the university's law school. While students are excited about the opportunity to learn about another legal tradition, especially one that's often in the headlines, groups fighting to keep sharia out of Canada's legal system worry that the hirings are a setback to their efforts. Bringing in Anver Emon, 34, and Mohammad Fadel, 38, to teach courses in Islamic law is part of a push for a more global focus that students are embracing, says acting law school dean Lorne Sossin. Having two full-time professors will give the law school a bigger concentration on Islamic law than anywhere else in Canada. "The early indications are that students are going to be beating down the doors, and it's a testament to the timeliness of it, with Islamic fundamentalism in the news abroad and of course the sharia debate in Ontario just this last year bringing these issues close to home," Mr. Sossin says. Too close to home for Homa Arjomand, who heads the International Campaign Against Sharia Court in Canada, and Alia Hogben, executive director of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women. Ms. Arjomand has been campaigning to keep Islamic law out of the Canadian system because in other parts of the world, such as Afghanistan or Nigeria, women have suffered under strict and violent interpretations of Islamic law. The hirings are "like a green light for sharia," Ms. Arjomand says. "I'm so mad." Ms. Hogben says she's "concerned about the motivation." Canada's law system should be totally secular so the university shouldn't be seen doing anything to prepare for the possibility that sharia law may make inroads, she says. The issue of sharia law hit the headlines in Ontario in 2003, after a Muslim lawyer founded the Islamic Institute of Civil Justice to settle family-law and inheritance-law disputes. The move was perfectly legal under Ontario's Arbitration Act, which allows people to voluntarily settle arguments outside the court system using an arbitrator of their choice. The outcomes are binding. Amid an outcry that raised the spectre of Muslim women in Ontario living under the same restrictions as those under the Taliban, where adultery allegations could lead to summary executions, the Ontario government did what governments do. It commissioned a report. Marion Boyd, a former Ontario cabinet minister who works as a mediator, spent six months researching the issue before recommending that religious law keep a place in family arbitration as long as safeguards are built in to protect women and children. Ontario's Attorney-General, Michael Bryant, plans to respond in the fall. The Boyd solution can work, according to Mr. Emon, who believes Islamic law is more open to interpretation than many realize and can be adjusted to protect the rights of women. Islamic law studies such as those he will offer at the University of Toronto are necessary to show students that Islamic law is open to more liberal readings, he says. "Islamic law is not just about these rules about cutting hands off thieves or discriminating against women. It's a living tradition in which jurists are trying to embrace and engage in active acts of interpretation," Mr. Emon says. And in 2006, Trials by Ordeal will be added to the U of T law curriculum. Administrators say that one conservative will be bound and thrown into Lake Ontario. If the conservatives floats, he will be deemed guilty of threatening political correctness and immediately burned at the stake. If he drowns, the dead conservative will be considered innocent and his family will receive a Hallmark card. As a child, Helena Aldridge developed a passion for defending the rights of others. Now on the brink of adulthood, the 18-year-old finds herself in disagreement with a group that ardently defends individual rights: the American Civil Liberties Union. Aldridge, who lives in Largo, graduated in May from East Lake High School. Faced with the prospect of paying for a five-year stint in the pharmacy program at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, she gratefully accepted a $450 scholarship from the Elks Lodge and two $500 scholarships from the NAACP. She was thrilled this summer when she learned she was one of three Florida teens to receive a $1,000 Norman Elliot Kent Youth Activist Scholarship from the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida. The group, based in Miami, offers the awards to graduating seniors who have demonstrated a strong commitment to civil liberties and civil rights through student activism. Then Aldridge read up on the organization. While she found much to applaud - the ACLU has been protecting rights guaranteed in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights since 1920 - she was dismayed at what she perceived as the group's abortion rights stance on abortion and its opposition to prayer in public schools. Aldridge, who is a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Clearwater, is opposed to abortion. She supports prayer in schools. "They want you to be able to choose whether you can get an abortion," Aldridge said. "I don't think it's the right thing to do. And if someone in the classroom decides they want the class to pray, I think they should be able to do that." She called the ACLU last week and left a message saying she had decided to decline the scholarship. Alessandra Meetze, a spokeswoman for the ACLU, expressed surprise at Aldridge's decision. "It's a first for us," she said. "We regret that she made that decision, but we certainly respect it." Meetze, reached Friday in Miami, said she has been trying to contact Aldridge. She wants to make sure she understands the ACLU is not antireligious. "It's a misunderstanding that a lot of people have," she said. "Nothing could be further from the truth. We have a long history of standing up for religious liberty." Aldridge's mother, Joyce, supported her daughter's decision. "We respect their positions, but it was just difficult to align with them in reference to receiving money from them," she said.
