Oil Is Well
01.31.06 (10:09 am) [edit]
By Ben Stein Published 1/31/2006 2:23:20 AM I see that the media and the left-wing foundations are in a state of hysteria over oil company profits. Exxon Mobil reported profits of about $10 billion for the last quarter of '05, and this has driven certain people who don't really know a lot about the oil business or how gasoline gets into their Volvos insane.
Kindly allow me to make a few points that won't make those people calm down but might make independent-minded thinkers think.
First, Big Oil did not make these profits "...off the suffering caused by Hurricane Katrina," as I actually heard someone say on the radio on Monday. Exxon Mobil made these profits because it has invested upwards of $10 billion a year in exploration and development for hydrocarbons, in good years and bad, in years when they made as much as they spent and in years when they made less than they spend exploring.
That meant they had oil on hand and the wherewithal to transport and refine oil when Katrina struck. But the suffering of the Katrina victims did not make the price of oil and gasoline rise. That rise came about because oil and gasoline traders at desks in investment banks went into hysteria mode when Katrina struck and bid up the price of oil and gasoline to hysterical levels. Because the big oil companies had a lot of oil on hand to sell despite the damage to refining and production caused by Katrina, they made money on some of that oil. (They had to buy some on the world market and they did not make anywhere near as much on that oil.)
The situation is precisely what happened to U.S. wheat farmers periodically in the 1970s and 1980s. If Russia had a poor harvest and needed to import grain, wheat farmers made good profits because world wheat traders bid up the price. They did not make money off the suffering of Russian wheat eaters. They made money because world wheat traders bid up the price based on Russian wheat conditions. (Before there was a world wheat market that included Russia, Russians and Ukrainians just starved when the wheat crop was poor.)
The oil situation is exactly the same. Good stuff. Go read the rest. http://www.spectator.org/dsp_article.asp?art_id=9350 " title="http://www.spectator.org/dsp_article.asp?art_id=9350 " target="_blank"http://www.spectator.org/dsp_...;

Hamas landslide reveals more about left than about ‘Palestinians’
01.31.06 (8:51 am) [edit]
|
It is a sad day for humanity when a people choose to elect terrorists as their leaders. But for those of us who believe that clarity is the prerequisite to moral progress, the landslide victory of the terrorist organization Hamas in Palestine has a silver lining. First and foremost, it proves what people who perceive reality have been saying for decades: The great majority of Palestinians — like the majority of Arabs elsewhere and like vast numbers of non-Arab Muslims — want Israel destroyed. Even granting legitimacy to the argument that the complete moral, financial and political corruption of Fatah was partly responsible for the Hamas victory, those who voted for Hamas did not find that organization's terror, religious celebration of murder or charter calling for Israel's destruction an impediment to their vote. It is true that in 1933, some Germans who voted for the Nazis did so out of anger at the Versailles Treaty and because of the economic chaos that engulfed their country. Indeed, it is widely agreed among historians that Hitler played down anti-Semitism in the Nazis' electoral campaigning. But every German voter was aware of the ferocity of the Nazis' Jew-hatred. And, whatever the case in 1933 Germany, in 2006 Palestine, Hamas has never played down its anti-Semitism or its support for continuing terrorism.
So the Palestinian vote reveals the falsity of the worldwide Left's view of the Palestinians as committed to peace. It likewise reveals the falsity of the Left's belief that Palestinian terror is supported by a small minority of the Palestinian population.
On just about every issue, the Left lives in a childlike fantasy realm. Their views are expressions of what they wish for, not what actually is. Here is a small sample: - Support for terror represents a tiny sliver of the Muslim world.
- All cultures are essentially morally equivalent.
- The United Nations is a wonderful institution and the best hope of mankind.
- Men and women are basically the same.
- It makes no difference whether children are raised by a loving man and woman or by two loving parents of the same sex.
- Violent criminals in our society are pushed into crime by socioeconomic circumstances, not because of their own flawed characters and values.
- War is not the answer.
The list of leftist positions based on a rejection of reality is as long as a list of leftist positions.
That's why it is often said that "a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged." But that, too, is wishful thinking. After some initial cognitive dissonance, the Hamas victory will have little or no impact on most leftists. The day after the Hamas landslide, the Los Angeles Times editorialized, "Most Palestinians, like most Israelis, want peace." Sure they do. Just not with Israel.

EU to delay taking Iran to Security Council
01.27.06 (3:56 pm) [edit]
|
The European Union is preparing to slow down its push to refer Iran to the United Nations Security Council in the hope of winning support from Russia and China. The EU, which is leading western diplomatic efforts on Iran's nuclear programme, is now likely to offer Iran one "last chance" by delaying a substantive Security Council discussion of the file to March. It had originally hoped to secure a decisive referral as early as next week. The extra time would meet objections from Russia and China that the EU and the US have been too hasty in seeking a speedy referral to New York. A final decision on whether to drag out the process further will be taken after a meeting in London on Monday night of the foreign ministers of France, Germany, the UK, Russia, China and the US. The EU still wants further assurances that Moscow and Beijing will support them in March if there is a delay. "We would prefer to go faster but if unity can be better guaranteed by waiting a little bit more, we should wait," said a European diplomat. How very unexpected. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/11061...

Mexican standoff
01.26.06 (4:45 pm) [edit]
|
I'm ashamed of my country today. I'm embarrassed that America allows itself to be pushed around by a corrupt tinpot oligarchy in Mexico. I'm mortified that a country that spends more on defense than any other in the history of the world permits armed incursions into its sovereign territory by bands of thugs supporting drug-running and human smuggling operations. I'm angry that we make the security of foreign borders a higher priority for the U.S. military than we make control of our own. I'm speechless that this is happening more than four years after foreign aliens entered the country illegally and killed 3,000 Americans. That's how I'm feeling today after reading the reports of outgunned, outmanned Texas law enforcement officers and Border Patrol agents being involved in an armed standoff with Mexican military personnel and drug smugglers inside our country, north of the Rio Grande. The Mexican military vehicles, with mounted machine guns, were, according to the American law enforcement officers, towing thousands of pounds of marijuana into our country. If this were an isolated incident, I guess we could all afford to brush it off as some sort of anomaly. But it is not. Earlier this month, the Department of Homeland Security, whose main job seems to be downplaying border security issues, reported there have been hundreds of documented incursions into our territory by Mexican soldiers. "Our government has to do something," said Chief Deputy Mike Doyal of the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Department. "It's not the immigrants coming over for jobs we're worried about. It's the smugglers, Mexican military and the national threat to our borders that we're worried about." Just consider some of the recent headlines from the border: Wars have certainly started with less provocation than this. Despite what President Bush says or may believe, Mexico is not our friend. It is a country that oppresses its own people. Blessed with great natural resources and climate, Mexico is an economic basket case. Wealth is amassed by politicians and criminals – and often they are one and the same. I don't blame ordinary Mexicans for trying to flee the dreadful conditions with which their leaders have enslaved them. But I do blame U.S. leaders for following policies that will, eventually, make America indistinguishable from Mexico. I also blame U.S. leaders for their appeasement of the organized crime syndicate that seems to run Mexico. I also blame U.S. leaders for inviting terrorists to take advantage of the out-of-control border. These are not problems that will be solved through negotiations. These are not problems that will be solved through economic agreements. These are not problems that will be solved through diplomacy. These are not problems that will be solved through weakness. Bush has failed in many ways as president. But in no area has he been a more profound failure than in his handling of the border and illegal immigration issues. He has disgraced this nation. And what we saw happen a few days ago in Texas, his home state, is just the latest example of his abdication of responsibility. It's time to get tough with Mexico – and I don't mean with just words. We need to put our neighbor on notice that the next incursion into our territory by any military or paramilitary force will be considered nothing less than an act of war. Military vehicles will be blown up on sight. Soldiers or those masquerading as soldiers will be shot on sight. Of course, such a sensible policy requires that we have more troops and better equipped soldiers than the invading enemy. We need to do it now. It's time to militarize the border while we build an impregnable barrier from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico. Well said. http://wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=48510  " title="http://wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=48510  " target="_blank"http://wnd.com/news/article.a...;

Iran ready to send 'investigators' to Nazi death camps
01.25.06 (1:22 pm) [edit]
|
Iran said Wednesday it was willing to send a team of "independent investigators" to visit former Nazi deaths camps across Europe -- but not President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who has described the Holocaust as a "myth".
"We welcome the proposal by British Prime Minister Tony Blair to visit the Holocaust sites," Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki was quoted as saying by the official news agency IRNA.
"We are ready to send teams of independent investigators to the places Mr. Blair speaks of," he said, but said these teams would comprise of people "who are not sympathetic to those who committed the crimes and who are not sympathetic to the Zionist regime (Israel)."
On Monday, Blair lashed out at an Iranian foreign ministry plan to stage a conference questioning the Holocaust as "shocking, ridiculous, stupid".
He also said Ahmadinejad "should come and see the evidence of the Holocaust himself in the countries of Europe".
But Mottaki said he also "regretted the inappropriate language" used by the British prime minister.
Ahmadinejad, an ultra-conservative who came to power in a surprise victory last June, has provoked international condemnation with a number of anti-Israeli and anti-Jewish remarks.
They include labelling Israel a "tumour" that should be "wiped off the map" or moved as far away as Alaska and claiming the Holocaust -- the systematic slaughter of an estimated six million Jews during World War II -- was a Western invention.
Iran on Tuesday defended its plan to stage a conference questioning the Holocaust and accused British Prime Minister Tony Blair of "intolerance" for criticising the event.
"The comments by Prime Minister Tony Blair are an insult to the intelligence of people around the world," foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said in statement carried by the ISNA news agency.
"For half a century, the defenders of the Holocaust have used every tribune to defend their position, and now have to listen to others."
The foreign ministry unveiled plans for the conference last week, a month after hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinjead described the Holocaust as a "myth".
Bring it on, morons.

Islamic Scholar Warns U.S. of 'Two-Faced' Muslims
01.25.06 (12:34 pm) [edit]
|
WASHINGTON – A leader of the small worldwide Muslim reform movement is warning the West against wishful thinking as the U.S. government promotes an intensive dialogue with Islam. "The dialogue is not proceeding well because of the two-facedness of most Muslim interlocutors on the one hand and the gullibility of well-meaning Western idealists on the other," Bassam Tibi said Tuesday in an interview with United Press International. Syrian-born Tibi, who claims to be a direct descendant of the prophet Mohammed and teaches political science at Goettingen University in Germany, appealed for intellectual honesty in these exchanges. This Is 'Peace'? "First, both sides should acknowledge candidly that although they might use identical terms these mean different things to each of them. The word 'peace,' for example, implies to a Muslim the extension of the Dar al-Islam – or 'House of Islam' – to the entire world," explained Tibi, who is also a research scholar at Harvard University. "This is completely different from the Enlightenment concept of eternal peace that dominates Western thought, a concept developed by Immanuel Kant," an 18th-century philosopher. This Is 'Tolerance'? "Similarly, when Muslims and the Western heirs of the Enlightenment speak of tolerance they have different things in mind. In Islamic terminology, this term implies abiding non-Islamic monotheists, such as Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians, as second-class believers. They are 'dhimmi,' a protected but politically immature minority." According to Tibi, the quest of converting the entire world to Islam is an immutable fixture of the Muslim worldview. Only if this task is accomplished, if the world has become a "Dar al-Islam," will it also be a "Dar a-Salam," or a house of peace. Tibi appealed to his co-religionists to "revise their understanding of peace and tolerance by accepting pluralism." Furthermore, he said, Muslim leaders should give up the notion of Jihad in the sense of conquest, as opposed to Jihad as an internal struggle of the individual. Liberal Mush Tibi's advice comes at a time when the U.S. government is urging American Muslim leaders to promote understanding for the United States in Islamic regions. To Tibi, this is more of a diplomatic endeavor than the promotion of a more profound theological understanding between Islam and the Judeo-Christian worldview prevalent in the West. But Muzammil Siddiqi, one senior Islamic scholar the State Department consults with, told UPI he found that his efforts in furthering contacts between Muslim, Christian and Jewish theologians were having some success. Indian-born Siddiqi is the director of the large Islamic Center of Orange County in California. In consultation with the State Department and in cooperation with the University of Kentucky, he traveled back and forth between the United States and the Middle East trying to convince Muslim theologians and jurists to meet with American church leaders. "I have found that many, though not all, were ready to welcome visitors from America and also to come here to explore with Christians and Jews what we have in common," Siddiqi said. Though Siddiqi's center is heavily engaged in interfaith activities, he made it clear that to him, as indeed for conservative Christians, syncretism – the mixing of religions – was anathema. Common values should be sought out, he explained, and the equality of all believers respected, be they Muslims, Christians, Hindus or Buddhists. But the purity of the faith must not be compromised. In an article in the prestigious Hamburg weekly Die Zeit, Tibi gave anecdotal evidence of how daunting a task this dialogue with Islam can be. Staring in Horror at the Bible The bishop of Hildesheim in Germany paid an imam a courtesy visit in his mosque. The imam handed the Catholic prelate a Koran, which he joyfully accepted. But when the bishop tried to present the imam with a Bible, the Muslim cleric just stared at him in horror and refused to even touch Christianity's holy book. "The bishop was irritated because he perceived this behavior as a gross discourtesy," wrote Tibi, "but the imam had only acted according to his faith. For if an imam gives a bishop a Koran, he considers this a Da'Wa, or call to Islam." This, explained Tibi, must be borne in mind when one engages in a dialogue with Muslim "scholars," for it corresponds to a verse in the Koran: "And say ... to those who are unlearned: 'Do ye submit yourselves?'" (Surah 3:20). Copyright 2002 by United Press International. All rights reserved. | Fog lifts on Damadola air strike |
01.23.06 (1:59 pm) [edit]
|
There have been a lot of conflicting statements and a fake photo designed to suggest that that the Damadola strike was clumsy and ineffective in getting the target and that anger in Pakistan and innocent victims were the principal result of the effort. But the fog is clearing. It appears that this was a well- conceived joint US-Pakistani intelligence operation which was very effective. A Pakistani official who is unnamed in the story gives us some detail: Ayman al-Zawahri, the apparent target of the U.S. attack Jan. 13, met his deputy, Abu Farraj al-Libbi, in Damadola last year, the security official said. Al-Libbi, a Libyan, had confessed to Pakistani interrogators after his capture in May 2005 he met al-Zawahri at Damadola, near the Afghan border, earlier in the year. Al-Libbi was captured after a shootout in another remote hamlet in northwestern Pakistan. Another high-ranking intelligence official confirmed al-Libbi’s account of the meeting, which took place a few months before his arrest. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. “His statement was later verified and we were able to confirm that al-Zawahri visited Damadola,” the first official said. The home was among three destroyed in the pre-dawn airstrike Jan. 13, which killed 13 villagers. U.S. and Pakistani intelligence — with the aid of local tribesmen and Afghans — began monitoring the home after al-Libbi’s confession, the officials said. ...This was a well-surveilled site. And the intelligence apparently sound. I think Zawahiri died in that operation . Either we know this and are keeping it quiet for operational reasons or his was one of the four or five bodies reportedly removed from the site by unknown persons to preclude a solid identification without which it would be imprudent to announce he was killed. Excellent analysis. Go read the rest, if I can get the $#@$@$#ing link to work... americanthinker.com/comments.php?comments_id=4259

Iran’s president sees “final war” between Muslims, West
01.23.06 (11:04 am) [edit]
|
Iran Focus
Tehran, Iran, Jan. 21 – Hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told senior leaders of a radical Palestinian group in Damascus on Friday that the Middle East conflict has become “the locus of the final war” between Muslims and the West, Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, reported.
Ahmadinejad, who was speaking on the second day of his two-day trip to Syria, told the leaders of Hamas, “Today, victory in Palestine has become a matter of life and death for the Islamic world and for Global Arrogance (the West)”.
The Iranian president urged the Palestinians to reject moves such as Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza.
“Some point to the withdrawal of the occupiers from parts of Palestine, but this event has already been greatly detrimental to Muslims”, Ahmadinejad said.
“If the occupiers stay on even one inch of Palestinian soil, the goal of Palestine will not be realised”, Ahmadinejad told Hamas leaders, who included Khalid Mash’al, the head of the group’s political bureau.
“We must not let our guard down now for even one moment against the enemies’ plots. Belittling the goal of Palestine is a great plot that the enemies are after”, he said.
Ahmadinejad has called the Holocaust a “myth” and said that Israel must be “wiped off the map”. Pay attention people. THIS is what our enemies are saying. http://www.iranfocus.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=5409 " title="http://www.iranfocus.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=5409 " target="_blank"http://www.iranfocus.com/modu...;

Sudden plea deals in tire slashing case
01.20.06 (3:32 pm) [edit]
|
In an unexpected twist in the Election Day tire slashing trial, four former Kerry-Edwards campaign staffers, including the sons of U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Milwaukee) and former Acting Mayor Marvin Pratt, have agreed to plead no contest to misdemeanors.
The plea agreements came in the middle of jury deliberations after an eight-day trial on felony property damage charges that carried potential 3 1/2 year prison terms upon conviction.
Michael Pratt, 33, Sowande Omokunde, 26, Lewis G. Caldwell, 29, and Lavelle Mohammad, 36, have all pleaded no contest to misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property. Omokunde is Moore's son.
Prosecutors will recommend probation sentences as part of the deal, and that the four together pay $5,317 in restitution for the damaged tires.
The surprise resolution was offered by prosecutors at 2 p.m., nearly 7 hours into deliberations and an hour after a jury note complained of an impasse.
Defendant Justin Howell, 21, was the only one of the five charged not included in the deal. The no contest pleas have not been formally made yet, but when they are, jurors will be left to deliberate the felony charge against Howell.
A note this morning from the jury to the judge about the verdict forms had hinted it was considering at least some convictions in the case, but the jury did not return a verdict before breaking for lunch.
Then around 1 p.m., the jury sent a second note suggesting they could not reach a verdict. “We have people that are adamant about their decision and are not budging. We don’t know what to do,” the note read in part.
Defense attorneys immediately requested a mistrial, which Circuit Judge Michael Brennan denied. He doubted that the jury was intractably hung, since testimony lasted close to seven court days and deliberations had only been going about six hours.
“That’s (an) insufficient amount of time to declare a mistrial,” Brennan said, and ordered the jury to continue deliberating.
Less than an hour later, news of the plea deals emerged. Big Suprise. Not. http://www.jsonline.com/news/...

The Hybrid Hoax: They're not as fuel-efficient as you think.
01.20.06 (2:24 pm) [edit]
|
by Richard Burr 01/20/2006 12:00:00 AM Detroit WHEN TREASURY SECRETARY John Snow announced guidelines for a new tax cut for the rich here last week, liberals did not denounce him. That's because the proposed tax breaks were for gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles, the favorite ride of environmentalists this side of bicycles. But the dirty secret about hybrids is that, even as the government continues to fuel their growth with tax subsidies, they don't deliver the gas savings they promise. Most cars and trucks don't achieve the gas mileage they advertise, according to Consumer Reports. But hybrids do a far worse job than conventional vehicles in meeting their Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy ratings, especially in city driving. Hybrids, which typically claim to get 32 to 60 miles per gallon, ended up delivering an average of 19 miles per gallon less than their EPA ratings under real-world driving conditions (which reflect more stop-and-go traffic and Americans' penchant for heavy accelerating) according to a Consumer Reports investigation in October 2005. For example, a 2004 Toyota Prius got 35 miles per gallon in city driving, off 42 percent from its EPA rating of 60 mpg. The 2003 Honda Civic averaged 26 mpg, off 46 percent from its advertised 48 mpg. And the Ford Escape small sport utility vehicle managed 22 mpg, falling 33 percent short of its 33 mpg rating. "City traffic is supposed to be the hybrids' strong suit, but their shortfall amounted to a 40 percent deficit on average," Consumer Reports said. See? Told ya. Hype. http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articl es/000/000/006/598bgjbv.asp" title="http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articl es/000/000/006/598bgjbv.asp" target="_blank"http://www.weeklystandard.com...

80 F-16's deployed to southwest asia
01.13.06 (5:11 pm) [edit]
Fighters deploy Coinciding with increased tensions with Iran over the resumption of illicit uranium enrichment, the U.S. Air Force has dispatched additional warplanes to the region in a not-so-subtle sign, military sources say.
An entire wing of F-16s, the Air National Guard's 122nd Fighter Wing based in Fort Wayne, Ind., left for a base in southwest Asia on Tuesday. A wing is usually about 72 aircraft and several hundred support personnel.
F-16s and support personnel from the 4th Fighter Squadron of the 388th Fighter Wing based at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, also deployed recently to Iraq. The squadron has 12 F-16s.
Both units' F-16s could be used in any military operation to take out Iranian nuclear facilities.
A spokesman for the U.S. Central Command Air Forces, which runs air operations in the region, said the F-16 deployment of about 80 jets is part of a rotation and is not related to Iran's uranium reprocessing.
Heads up, Mullahs.

Surge in Sale of Disposable Cell Phones May Have Terror Link
01.13.06 (4:18 pm) [edit]
Phones Can Be Difficult or Impossible to Track; Large Quantities Purchased in California, Texas
Jan. 12, 2006 — Federal agents have launched an investigation into a surge in the purchase of large quantities of disposable cell phones by individuals from the Middle East and Pakistan, ABC News has learned.
The phones — which do not require purchasers to sign a contract or have a credit card — have many legitimate uses, and are popular with people who have bad credit or for use as emergency phones tucked away in glove compartments or tackle boxes. But since they can be difficult or impossible to track, law enforcement officials say the phones are widely used by criminal gangs and terrorists.
"There's very little audit trail assigned to this phone. One can walk in, purchase it in cash, you don't have to put down a credit card, buy any amount of minutes to it, and you don't, frankly, know who bought this," said Jack Cloonan, a former FBI official who is now an ABC News consultant.
Law enforcement officials say the phones were used to detonate the bombs terrorists used in the Madrid train attacks in March 2004.
"The application of prepaid phones for nefarious reasons, is really widespread. For example, the terrorists in Madrid used prepaid phones to detonate the bombs in the subway trains that killed more than 200 people," said Roger Entner, a communications consultant.
150 Phones in One Sale, 60 Phones in Another
The FBI is closely monitoring the potentially dangerous development, which came to light following recent large-quantity purchases in California and Texas, officials confirmed.
In one New Year's Eve transaction at a Target store in Hemet, Calif., 150 disposable tracfones were purchased. Suspicious store employees notified police, who called in the FBI, law enforcement sources said.
In an earlier incident, at a Wal-Mart store in Midland, Texas, on Dec. 18, six individuals attempted to buy about 60 of the phones until store clerks became suspicious and notified the police. A Wal-Mart spokesperson confirmed the incident.
The Midland police report, dated Dec. 18 and obtained by ABC News, states: "Information obtained by MPD [Midland Police Department] dispatch personnel indicated that approximately six individuals of Middle-Eastern origin were attempting to purchase an unusually large quantity of tracfones (disposable cell phones with prepaid minutes attached)." At least one of the suspects was identified as being from Iraq and another from Pakistan, officials said.
"Upon the arrival of officers, suspects were observed moving away from the registers — appearing to evade detection while ridding themselves of the merchandise."
Other reports have come in from other cities, including Dallas, and from authorities in other states. Authorities in Pennsylvania, New York and other parts of Texas confirmed that they were alerted to the cases, and sources say other jurisdictions were also notified.
The growing use of the throwaway cell phones has been cited by President Bush as an important justification for expanding the wiretap laws under the Patriot Act.
Great. A big thank you to the New York Times for their NSA leaked story. It once again shows that the terrorists have a subscription.

Hamza 'had Big Ben as terror target'

Abu Hamza, the Muslim preacher, had a 10-volume terrorism manual at his home which was dedicated to Osama bin Laden and featured a list of targets including Big Ben, skyscrapers, airports and football stadiums, a court heard yesterday.
The Encyclopaedia of Afghani Jihad was written in Arabic between 1989 and 1999 with the help of Mujahadeen fighters in Afghanistan.
Supporters of Abu Hamza outside court yesterday
It featured sections on explosives, sabotage and assassination, the Old Bailey was told.
The first volume talks of a holy war against English, French and Communist "imperialists" who protect Israel.
It also refers to an "external pressure unit" which "belongs to the execution unit which operates abroad" and should be sent to a country "at least 10 years" before the Jihad starts.
Among the high-profile targets suggested are the "Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower and Big Ben clock".
Targets where there would be bigger loss of life are suggested as "skyscrapers, ports, airports, nuclear plants, football stadiums and large congregations at Christmas".
David Perry, prosecuting, said it was a "manual, a blueprint for terrorism". "It includes all anyone ever needs to know if they want to make a home-made bomb or explosive."
Hamza, 47, who was born in Egypt and has lived in Britain for several years as a British citizen, is accused of nine counts of soliciting to murder, four counts of using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour and two counts of possessing abusive recordings with a view to distribution and possession of a document useful to preparing terrorism.
...In one speech, delivered to a meeting in Whitechapel, east London, in 1997 or 1998 Hamza said the role of women should be to encourage their husbands to train children as young as 10 so they could become mujahadeen (holy warriors).
In a tape aimed at young people he said: "When you meet Allah you will be asked who was killed at your hands?"
Britain and Western nations were "100 per cent anti-Islam", he said in another tape, calling on his followers to spread Islam "by the sword" and adding: "European leaders only respect those that are strong."
He said: "Killing the kafir for any reason is OK, killing the kafir for no reason is OK," and he specifically singled out those that granted licences for "wine shops".
Hamza added: "We like blood and are addicted to it. When they say they love Allah they must ask themselves how much fafir blood they have spilt for Allah."
Describing non-believers as "germs and viruses" in another tape he added: "There is no drop of liquid loved by Allah more than blood of Serbs, Jews or any other enemy of Allah."
In a speech about a terrorist attack in Egypt, which killed 58 people in November 1997, Hamza told his audience the tourist industry should be Islamised and added: "While children should not be killed directly, their killing is permissible if they are in the target area."
Asked if suicide bombing was permissible he said: "People call it suicide to put people off. It is not called suicide, it is called martyrdom."
...Hamza claimed Jews were "blasphemous, traitors and dirty" and added that "Hitler was sent to torture and humiliate Jews", the court was told. [Hmmm... 1932 ring a bell anyone? -ed
Can they make their plans any clearer lefties?

Bush Understated Saddam's Threat
01.12.06 (10:50 am) [edit]
By Lt. Col. Gordon Cucullu FrontPageMagazine.com | January 12, 2006
Steven Hayes’ must-read article on links between Saddam Hussein’s regime and al Qaeda and other terrorist groups is stunning reading. Check out his article in The Weekly Standard. Hayes discusses initial information released from a trove of documents captured by American and Coalition forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom. This is not a footlocker full but a collection larger than many public libraries: a staggering two million items. Generally referred to as “documents” by the media, Hayes notes that many of these items are floppy discs, CDs, hard drives, and other “exploitable items” in Pentagonese, each of which may, in itself, contain hundreds or even thousands of documents. That means that the two million number may be double or more. It is an amazing repository of intelligence information on a rogue regime. And we are only getting the teasers.
One of the oddities of history is how dictators like to document their atrocities. Hitler’s Nazi bureaucrats were compulsive memo writers and paper savers. Saddam, an admirer of the Fuehrer in so many ways, seems to have emulated him in this manner also. While we know lots of material was destroyed either by retreating Baathists or as collateral war damage, the amount surviving is staggering. And that is the problem. There is too much of a good thing.
Because of the Democrat accusation avalanche - “Bush lied about WMD” - refrain that became the basis for the 2004 presidential campaign, the focus of the enormous translation burden to date has been on WMD-related material. Finding out what we can about Saddam’s WMD is a logical mission for many other reasons too. Much has emerged. But other regime actions have taken second priority, and this needs to be corrected. Another leftist slur is that “there are no links between Saddam and al Qaeda or other terrorists.” Hayes is a pioneer in his book The Connection in showing how strong ties in fact existed.
Now the depth and intricacy of the Iraqi-terrorist connections are being revealed by Saddam’s own documents. As Hayes makes the point, inside these documents are the names and backgrounds of 8,000 or more terrorists who trained in Iraq from 1999-2002. Eight thousand terrorists trained in Iraq under Saddam! And anti-war media along with apologists for Saddam still blindly insist that Saddam had not ties to al Qaeda and to terrorist organizations. Such willful denial in the face of this evidence is delusional.
Powerful stuff. Go read the rest. http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=20878" title="http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=20878" target="_blank"http://www.frontpagemag.com/A...

Condoleezza Rice's anti-Russian stance based on sexual problems
01.11.06 (1:05 pm) [edit]
The US Secretary of State released a coarse anti-Russian statement. This is because she is a single woman who has no children
Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, openly criticized the Russian government in connection with the gas conflict with Ukraine. Ms. Rice used quite a trivial technique of psychological pressure, which is mostly practiced in the field of education.
Ms. Rice's criticism can be explained with the politician's personal peculiarities. Why is Condoleezza Rice so fond of her "strict teacher" role? Is it her technique that she follows to stay in the center of political attention? The leader of the Liberal and Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), Vladimir Zhirinovsky, expressed his opinion on the matter in an exclusive interview with Pravda.Ru.
"Condoleezza Rice released a coarse anti-Russian statement. This is because she is a single woman who has no children. She loses her reason because of her late single status. Nature takes it all.
"Such women are very rough. They are all workaholics, public workaholics. They can be happy only when they are talked and written about everywhere: "Oh, Condoleezza, what a remarkable woman, what a charming Afro-American lady! How well she can play the piano and speak Russian! What a courageous, tough and strong female she is!
"This is the only way to satisfy her needs of a female. She derives pleasure from it. If she has no man by her side at her age, he will never appear. Even if she had a whole selection of men to choose from she would stay single because her soul and heart have hardened. Like Napoleon, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane, or Alexander the Great of Macedon Ms. Rice needs to fight and release tough public statements in global scale. She needs to be on top of the world.
"Ms. Rice was always interested in Russia. Now she needs to prove that she does have a certain amount of knowledge about Russia. Her goal number one is to observe USA's interest. If Russia rises, it means that the USA falls down. Europe has united, China is growing speedily and Russia possesses immense power in terms of fuel resources. The US administration cannot do anything about it.
"The USA experiences the crisis of ideological and moral values. Americans try to talk about positive family values, although the actual state of things is disastrous. That is why they need to protect themselves with such public personas as Condoleezza Rice who gains pleasure from political commotions.
"The civilized world needs to think about a decision when single politicians are not allowed to stay in power. This was a common practice in the Soviet political system. The matter of international relations is very subtle and exquisite. One single word or phrase may play an extremely important role in politics. This is not the place, where one can sublimate their personal sexual problems.
..."Condoleezza Rice needs a company of soldiers. She needs to be taken to barracks where she would be satisfied. On the other hand, she can hardly be satisfied because of her age. This is a complex. She needs to return to her university and teach students there. She could also deal with psychological analysis.
"The true reason of Ms. Rice's attack against Russia is very simple. Condoleezza Rice is a very cruel, offended woman who lacks men's attention. Releasing such stupid remarks gives her the feeling of being fulfilled. This is the only way for her to attract men's attention," Vladimir Zhirinovsky said.
Huh? Wha? Waitaminnit? Pravda? Ahhh, I thought it was the New York Times...

Harry Potter Broomstick: Bad Vibrations?
01.11.06 (9:00 am) [edit]
Harry Potter Broomstick: Bad Vibrations? By Martha W. Kleder
Mattel is marketing a toy broomstick in its Harry Potter line that is raising eyebrows.
The Harry Potter Nimbus 2000, for sale since October of 2001, is marketed to 8—to 12-year-old children. A toy replica of the broomstick Harry Potter uses in the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the Nimbus 2000 is, according to at least one mother, providing a little too much stimulation.
Quoting from the editorial review posted on the Amazon.com Web site, “Kids can now ‘fly’ a Nimbus 2000 broomstick just like member of their favorite Quidditch team.”
“The Nimbus 2000 features a grooved stick and handle for easy riding. Enhancing the excitement are the vibrating effects and magical swooping and whooshing sounds the broom makes when on. Sounds can also be activated when the switch is set in standby mode. Requires three AA batteries (included),” reviewer Larry White adds.
A check of other online toy stores shows that description to be accurate.
Sarah Rosales, Vice President of Public Relations for Mattel's Entertainment Division said, “Our intent in creating the Nimbus 2000 Flying Broomstick was to bring the magic of the fictional ”Harry Potter“ tale to life for children. The toy was created to mimic the effect of flying and uses batteries to produce swooshing sound effects.”
“At Mattel, the well-being of children is always our top priority.”
Rosales added that Mattel “does not consider the toy inappropriate” adding that they “apologize that some parents may consider it to be [inappropriate], but that was not the company's intention.”
Customer reviews of the toy are mixed. A reviewer identified as “A toy enthusiast from New Jersey” described her shock when she purchased the toy for her daughter last Christmas.
“It wasn’t until after she opened her gift and started playing with it that I realized that the toy may offer a more than sensational experience. The broomstick has cute sound effects and ***VIBRATES*** when they put it between their legs to fly,” she wrote on December 26, 2001.
“Come on — what were the creators of this toy thinking? She’ll keep playing with the Nimbus 2000, but with the batteries removed,” she added.
Other reviewers were apparently not as quick on the uptake. “Ashley” from Texas is one who found nothing unusual with the toy.
“My 12-year-old daughter is a big Harry Potter fan, and loved the part with the Nimbus 2000, so I decided to buy her this toy,” Ashley wrote on June 11, 2002. “Even my daughter’s friends enjoy playing with this fun toy. I was surprised at how long they can just sit in her room and play with this magic broomstick!!”
Other reviewers seemed to be simply clueless. “Poola13” from Ohio noted how popular the toy was with his/her 12-year-old daughter and her friends. Poola13 added in the June 11, 2002, review that, “they play for hours in her bedroom with this great toy. They really seem to like the special effects it offers (the sound effects and vibrating). My oldest daughter (17) really likes it too!”
Now, given the growing attention this toy is receiving on various Internet message boards, that last message is likely a tongue-in-cheek posting, however the first question remains true, “What WERE the creators of this toy thinking?”
Calls to Mattel were not returned by press time.
Heh! Imagine...

The anti-war movement will change its song if the war comes home
01.10.06 (9:46 am) [edit]
By Christopher Skeet Published: Monday, January 9, 2006
Another Christmas break has come and gone without anything unusual occurring. That is, nothing unusual relative to the times. I mean, sure, two Iraqi children were killed by "militants" who machine-gunned their family's car. Around 125 Shi'ite pilgrims were blown to pieces by "insurgents" in Karbala. In Indonesia, Jemaah Islamiyah "rebels" beheaded three schoolgirls. "Separatists" beheaded two more civilians in southern Thailand. And Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, aside from banning all Western music and a few domestic newspapers, declared that Israel should be "wiped off the map."
Like I said, nothing unusual.
One way to explain these phenomena is that the terrorists are really CIA agents tasked with perpetuating the war on terror so Bush can use oil profits in order to bribe Fox News to lead the media blackout concerning the landing strip being built by Halliburton in the Alaska Wildlife Refuge for gay Martians to land at and, in collusion with Zionists, secretly control the planet from underground bunkers in Crawford. I'll leave it to the chaps of Leaflet Division at International Socialist to fill you in on the details.
A more likely explanation is that the Iraq War has nothing to do with the atrocities being committed worldwide on anybody who isn't a Wahhabi extremist. This past month, terrorist networks were broken up in Germany, Spain, and France, all countries which steadfastly oppose U.S. intervention in Iraq. Michael Moore, in a truly rare moment of insight, once pointed out that the 9/11 terrorists, by attacking liberal cities, most likely killed many more Democrats than Republicans. Exactly. The term "infidel" applies to Kerry voters and European Yank-bashers as well. As Hizballah leader Hussein Massawi once summed it up, "We are not fighting so that you will offer us something. We are fighting to eliminate you."
Lets hypothetically assume the jihadists and the extreme left together achieve their goals. The U.S. military is crushed in Iraq. Israel is nuked. Al-Qaeda establishes a caliphate stretching from Morocco to the Philippines. America crumbles from a capitalist superpower into a cradle-to-grave welfare state. Now what? Now that the mean ol' warmongering neo-con cowboys are gone, will bin Laden accept the olive branch offered by Western peace movements? Al-Qaeda considers Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Shi'ites, Druze, and moderate Sunnis as infidels worthy of decapitation. How likely, then, would ragtag groups of bongo-beating, impulse-driven atheists would make bin Laden's A-list?
If it ever came down to a final clash of civilizations between the jihadists and the anti-war crowd, I'm putting my money on the jihadists. It's hard to imagine legions of third-world, battle-hardened fanatics being outfought by a conglomerate of metrosexuals who can't go half a day without another Starbucks fix. While the peaceniks smother the jihadists with love, the jihadists will smother the peaceniks with blankets of bomb shrapnel which can penetrate even the loudest cries of, "Oh my gawd, like, I didn't even vote for Bush!" Holding in front of you a hardcover copy of Noam Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent" will stop an AK-47 barrage for only so long before 7.62mm bullets begin tearing through your internal organs, not to mention your brand new Che shirt.
Realize that al-Qaeda wants us dead regardless of our political affiliations or our personal views on the merits of the Iraq War. For all the miscalculations the Bush administration has made in Iraq, it has still kept the battle off American soil. If the U.S. military loses, as some campus activists openly hope for, there will be nobody to protect them when RPG rounds start slamming into their film festivals.
Top shelf.

Perspective: Create an e-annoyance, go to jail
01.09.06 (12:22 pm) [edit]
Annoying someone via the Internet is now a federal crime.
It's no joke. Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity.
In other words, it's OK to flame someone on a mailing list or in a blog as long as you do it under your real name. Thank Congress for small favors, I guess.
This ridiculous prohibition, which would likely imperil much of Usenet, is buried in the so-called Violence Against Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act. Criminal penalties include stiff fines and two years in prison.
"The use of the word 'annoy' is particularly problematic," says Marv Johnson, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union. "What's annoying to one person may not be annoying to someone else."
Buried deep in the new law is Sec. 113, an innocuously titled bit called "Preventing Cyberstalking." It rewrites existing telephone harassment law to prohibit anyone from using the Internet "without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy."
To grease the rails for this idea, Sen. Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican, and the section's other sponsors slipped it into an unrelated, must-pass bill to fund the Department of Justice. The plan: to make it politically infeasible for politicians to oppose the measure.
The tactic worked. The bill cleared the House of Representatives by voice vote, and the Senate unanimously approved it Dec. 16.
There's an interesting side note. An earlier version that the House approved in September had radically different wording. It was reasonable by comparison, and criminalized only using an "interactive computer service" to cause someone "substantial emotional harm."
That kind of prohibition might make sense. But why should merely annoying someone be illegal?
Arlen Specter, once again showing what a waste of skin he is. Moron.

Humans Do Not Understand Mirror Reflections, Say Researchers
01.06.06 (5:19 pm) [edit]
Psychologists at the University of Liverpool have found that people still find it difficult to understand how mirrors work.
Dr Marco Bertamini, from the University’s School of Psychology, conducted a number of experiments by covering a mirror on a wall and inviting participants to walk along a line parallel to the mirror.
He asked them to guess the point at which they would be able to see their reflection. Results showed that people believe they can see themselves even before they are level with the near edge of the mirror.
Dr Bertamini said: “People tend not to understand that the location of the viewer matters in terms of what is visible in a mirror. A good example of this is what we call the Venus Effect, which relates to the many famous paintings of the goddess Venus, looking in a small mirror.
“If you were to look at these paintings, you would assume that Venus is admiring her own face, because you see her face in the mirror. Your viewpoint, however, is rather different from hers; if you can see her in the mirror then she would see you in the mirror.”
Participants were also asked to estimate the image size of their head as it appears on the surface of the mirror. They estimated that it would be a similar size to their physical head. However, participants based their answer on the image they saw inside the mirror rather than on the image on the surface of it. They failed to recognise that the image on the surface of the mirror is half the size of the observer because a mirror is always halfway between the observer and the image that appears inside the mirror.
Dr Bertamini added: “Mirrors make us see virtual objects that exist in a virtual world; they are windows onto this world. On the one hand we trust what we see, but on the other hand this is a world that we know has no physical existence. This is one of the reasons why throughout history people have been fascinated by mirrors.”

National Defense Secrets: A Not-so-Funny International Joke!
01.06.06 (10:06 am) [edit]
by J.B. Williams Friday, January 6, 2006
How odd and alarming it is in the post 9/11 world, to note that secret intelligence and security operations are no longer an acceptable practice in America. Known for the most complex and effective national defense systems in the world, America seems to be having its biggest problems keeping its covert defense operations, well, covert.
In the name of open disclosure, or maybe more specifically, political "Gotcha-ism", the American press seems to take great pride in outing what are supposed to be Top Secret national security operations. At a time of great political division evidenced by the daily barrage of bare-knuckled rhetorical headlines attacking all facets of government, in particular the current administration, it isn’t tough to find some disgruntled malcontent doing time behind a CIA or NSA desk, willing to be the latest un-named source in a new form of political dissent. In fact, if you want to keep anything secret today, you had better not tell it to anyone working for our nation’s Top Secret agencies…
The latest story involves an NSA data-mining effort aimed at intercepting communications between known Al Qaeda cells operating outside American borders and people currently residing in America. The pros call them "sleeper cells". Silent, invisible members of multiple international terrorist organizations, or just plain, old fashioned, home-grown sympathizers, living in average American neighborhoods, leading seemingly normal American lives, laying low below radar, planning and plotting the next 9/11.
Even stranger is the fact that the very same people who over-criticize our intelligence and defense community for NOT effectively unraveling the pre-911 puzzle in order to prevent that horrible day, are now busy outing every governmental agency effort to stop the next 9/11.
Now partisans see this as only a politically motivated effort to undermine a President unpopular with many Ivy League professional snoops working inside these agencies and their liberal elitist friends running most news rooms in America these days. To be sure, these stories become huge headlines for the purpose of at least exploiting these opportunities for political gain. But the root motives may be far more insidious.
...The irresponsible reporting habits of today’s lamestream press are unconscionable. But back to point… Exactly what tools should be employed to stop the next 9/11 and what should happen to so-called whistleblowers who seek fame, fortune or political gain from outing Top Secret national security operations?
There is good reason to believe that the Bush administration did nothing wrong or illegal in their efforts to intercept terrorist related communications. Congressional oversight was briefed on the activities every step of the way though few admit it now. The Justice Department has issued a formal statement supporting the legality and necessity of the now not-so-secret NSA operation.
Ranking Democrat On The House Intelligence Committee Representative Jane Harman (D-CA) Calls The NSA Program "Essential" To Targeting Al Qaeda. "As the Ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, I have been briefed since 2003 on a highly classified NSA foreign collection program that targeted Al Qaeda. I believe the program is essential to US national security and that its disclosure has damaged critical intelligence capabilities." (Rep. Jane Harman, Harman Statement on NSA Electronic Surveillance Program, Press Release, 12/21/05)
Though the same old Democrats seek to make political hay by exploiting the story as further evidence of a renegade administration, the average American seems to grasp the fact that our intelligence community is designed and obligated to use all reasonable means to collect and piece together a puzzle that could prevent events worse than 9/11. They understand that such efforts can only work in secret. Most are more concerned with what appears to be a wholesale effort to out the entire counter-terrorism effort and are increasingly frustrated by a general lack of responsible reporting by our illustrious press corp.
There is every reason to believe that the administration would have been irresponsible and reckless had they not taken every reasonable measure to intercept such communications. There is also every reason to believe that attempting to keep such efforts secret through partisan channels would jeopardize any such operation. Even as careful as they allegedly were to work in secrecy, here we are discussing our nation’s most guarded secrets in the public square.
Those who know my body of work know that few in America are more concerned with modern threats on our freedoms and liberties. But I am even more concerned with the current wholesale leaking of all counter-terrorism efforts and the press’s willingness to report all without even questioning the credibility of the whistleblower.
Go ye, and read the rest. One of our neighbors to the north gets it.

Tweaking the United States
01.05.06 (12:57 pm) [edit]
As the Iranian nuclear threat continues to grow, neither the United States nor Israel are eager to be damned by the global community for sending in bombers to take out Tehran's dispersed and hard-to-find subterranean nuclear factories. Meanwhile, European diplomats will fail in their milquetoast efforts to bribe the Iranian mullahs to forgo nukes. And a peaceful revolution that leads to a new Iranian democracy renouncing such weapons remains a utopian dream.
So, the practical and, realistically, best solution to thwarting Iran's nuclear-weapon ambitions would be for the Russians to cease selling the Iranians nuclear technology. They could demand – not just suggest – that all uranium enrichment for "peaceful" energy use be done inside Russia.
Yet for all their talk, the Russians will not do this. Besides the profits to be had from trading with the oil-rich theocracy, the Russians derive a certain satisfaction from tweaking the United States. After the fall of the Soviet Union, and the loss of global influence, the Russians gain at least psychic satisfaction knowing that the Iranians are a thorn in the U.S.'s side. Moscow enjoys observing that Washington doesn't always get its way – and may find itself overwhelmed with a nuclear enemy on the doorstep of the newly democratic Iraq.
China plays the same spoiler role in regard to North Korea. Ostensibly, it has no desire to see Kim Jong-il with a nuclear arsenal on its already unstable border. But the Chinese apparently see advantages in allowing a renegade regime to drive their rivals crazy, especially Japan, Taiwan and the United States.
So in the manner of Russia's President Vladimir Putin, the Chinese leadership will promise to play a "constructive role." Meanwhile, the Americans can worry themselves sick over whether Los Angeles will soon be in range of a nut with a nuclear-tipped missile.
VDH at his usual insightfulness. Read the rest.

Blame Campaign Finance Reform for Abramoff Scandal
01.05.06 (10:37 am) [edit]
If you’re looking for someone to blame for creating the environment that led to the Abramoff scandal, a good place to start is with campaign finance reform.
Ever since Congress and the FEC began limiting the amount of money American citizens may contribute to political candidates, they have been increasing the power of lobbyists. Aside from the fact that this was a patently un-American limit on free speech – this so-called campaign finance “reform” has fostered an environment where lobbyists may legally contribute more money to a candidate than an individual can.
Because of these limits, candidates must now spend vast amounts of time fundraising. And savvy political candidates, who value time as their most important commodity, have discovered they get more bang for their buck by raising money from lobbyists, who, by law, are allowed to contribute more money than you or I, as citizens, can.
This environment certainly doesn’t excuse the outrageous and unethical behavior of those who have abused the system. But it helps explain whey we are in this mess.
Spot on. Go read the rest.

Interim WMF Exploit Savior
01.04.06 (9:11 am) [edit]
We've all been following the dramatic story of the whole wmf exploit and how it is easily spoofed into other image types. The last day of 2005 the wmf exploit exploded into other various venues such as instant messages, email, and more. Various tools have been setup to try and catch or filter out the wmf exploit, but last night it has mutated. Newest variations change the header and tail of the wmf exploit making its signature difficult to locate.
Technical details: "this is a DLL which gets injected to all processes loading user32.dll. It patches the Escape() function in gdi32.dll. The result of the patch is that the SETABORT escape sequence is not accepted anymore."
Once Microsoft releases an official patch, or if the above doesn't work, you can uninstall it from your Add/Remove Programs menu. It'll be listed as "Windows WMF Metafile Vulnerability HotFix".
The Internet Storm Center gives this patch its stamp of approval:
We have very carefully scrutinized this patch. It does only what is advertised, it is reversible, and, in our opinion, it is both safe and effective.
The word from Redmond isn't encouraging. We've heard nothing to indicate that we're going to see anything from Microsoft before January 9th.
The upshot is this: You cannot wait for the official MS patch, you cannot block this one at the border, and you cannot leave your systems unprotected.
So there you have it, don't trust the firewall filters, don't trust the antivirus vendors, don't wait for Microsoft. Install the patch immediately. If you are running a Windows operating system the patch doesn't support, time to shut it off and wait.
This is a bad one, folks. Install this patch, and be EXTREMELY careful. I would even disable preview in your mail client, if you use one.

Senator Harry Reid to Speak at DailyKos Convention
01.03.06 (4:27 pm) [edit]
Senator Harry Reid to Speak at DailyKos Convention I am pleased to announce the first-released name of a featured speaker at the YearlyKos liberal community convention......Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).
If you're unfamiliar with Senator Reid's strong leadership and record, be sure to read about him at my article, Five Liberals Who Made a Difference in 2005, and at Profile of Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.
The first annual YearlyKos convention is scheduled for June 8-11, 2006 in Las Vegas. The convention is designed to bring together the liberal community which has grown around the influential DailyKos blog, which has over 350,000 members and receives more than 4 million unique reader visits each week.
Senator Reid is a DailyKos member, and has posted a few blog entries there. Other prominent political members of DailyKos include Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Rep. John Conyers (D-MI).
Whoohoo! With Kos' record for backing candidates, I guess we can look forward to at least 6 more Senate seats, and two in the house for Repubs... :)

Iran can now produce its own yellowcake
01.03.06 (3:23 pm) [edit]
TEHERAN — Iran, in what has been regarded as a major step, has announced development of technology to separate uranium from its ore.
The Iranian Atomic Energy Organization has achieved indigenous capability to separate uranium from its ore, officials said. They said the technology, known as a mixer-settler, would enable the extraction of uranium from the mined ore to produce concentrated uranium oxide, or yellowcake.
"The mixer-settler can be used effectively in the fuel cycle for producing zirconium and uranium," an Iranian engineer told state television on Jan. 1. "It minimizes the use of solvent and has a recycling mechanism."
In 2003, Iran launched a project to extract uranium from a mine at Saghand, Middle East Newsline reported. Saghand, located in the province of Yazd, has an estimated 1.5 million tons of uranium ore.
The separation technology would enable the production of zirconium, a metal used to preventing corrosion in nuclear plants. Two liquids of different density are mixed to enable the compounds to move from one phase to another.
"Unfortunately, because of the problems that exist, it was not possible for us to buy this machine from abroad and we had to build it domestically," an Iranian official said. "Fortunately, we succeeded."
Uranium ore extraction has been regarded as a key element in the completion of the nuclear fuel cycle. The technology would enable Iran to become independent of foreign suppliers, including Russia. Russia has been the prime contractor of the $1 billion Bushehr nuclear reactor, scheduled to begin full operations in late 2006.
Iran plans to take the yellowcake to a facility for conversion into uranium hexafluoride gas, or UF6. At that point, the gas would be used for enrichment for use as either nuclear fuel or in nuclear weapons.
On Tuesday, deputy head of the Iran's atomic energy agency Mohammad Saidi said that nuclear fuel research will be resumed this week after a two year suspension.
Just ducky...
