| With five private jets, Travolta still lectures on global warming |
| 03.30.07 (1:15 pm) [edit] |
|
His serious aviation habit means he is hardly the best person to lecture others on the environment. But John Travolta went ahead and did it anyway. The 53-year-old actor, a passionate pilot, encouraged his fans to "do their bit" to tackle global warming. Scroll down for more... Happy landings: John Travolta's plane collection parked at his home in Florida But although he readily admitted: "I fly jets", he failed to mention he actually owns five, along with his own private runway. Clocking up at least 30,000 flying miles in the past 12 months means he has produced an estimated 800 tons of carbon emissions – nearly 100 times the average Briton's tally. Travolta made his comments this week at the British premiere of his movie, Wild Hogs. He spoke of the importance of helping the environment by using "alternative methods of fuel" – after driving down the red carpet on a Harley Davidson. Travolta, a Scientologist, claimed the solution to global warming could be found in outer space and blamed his hefty flying mileage on the nature of the movie business. But his appointment as a "serving ambassador" for the Australian airline Qantas doesn't seem to have much to do with the movies. Nor does a recent, two-month round-the-world flying trip. "It [global warming] is a very valid issue," Travolta declared. "I'm wondering if we need to think about other planets and dome cities. "Everyone can do their bit. But I don't know if it's not too late already. We have to think about alternative methods of fuel. "I'm probably not the best candidate to ask about global warming because I fly jets. "I use them as a business tool though, as others do. I think it's part of this industry – otherwise I couldn't be here doing this and I wouldn't be here now." Travolta's five private planes – a customised £2million Boeing 707, three Gulfstream jets and a Lear jet – are kept at the bottom of his garden in the US next to a private runway. Indeed, such is his enthusiasm for flying, he persuaded his wife, actress Kelly Preston, to name their son Jett when he was born 14 years ago. Five years ago he piloted his own Boeing 707 on a 13- city "Spirit of Friendship Tour" for Qantas, taking in Los Angeles, Auckland, Sydney, Singapore, Tokyo, London, Paris and New York and amassing over 35,000 flying miles. More recently, a gruelling promotional schedule for his two latest projects, Hairspray and Wild Hogs, has seen him fly extensively over the past year. This includes a country-wide tour of the US and a visit to Canada as well as this week's appearance in Leicester Square. Such prolific mileage means that, over the past 12 months, he has accumulated around 800 tonnes of carbon emissions. According to a recent study by the government-funded Carbon Trust, this means he boasts a carbon "footprint" nearly 100 times that of the average Briton, who is responsible for 10.92 tons of Co2, from his flights alone. One of the world's leading climate change businesses, the Carbon Neutral Company, has written to Travolta, suggesting ways he could reduce these alarming levels. He has yet to respond to their advice. Environmental groups were quick to criticise Travolta for "discrediting the cause". John Buckley, managing director-of CarbonFootprint.com, said: "John Travolta has such a high-profile celebrity status, so what he says carries an extraordinary amount of weight. "So it is such a shame when someone of his standing is so outspoken about green issues, yet fails to practise what he preaches. "Unfortunately someone of his standing ends up discrediting the cause itself, because he is saying people should protect the environment on one hand, yet traveling on a private plane on the other. "Green issues are serious and should be treated as such. "It is vital for celebrities to toe the line when they speak out in support of it." This is London

| Democrats Outraged Scooter Libby did whatever it is that He Did |
| 03.30.07 (11:45 am) [edit] |
|
Washington – Democrats across the country were outraged after Vice President Dick Cheney’s former Chief of Staff, Lewis “Scooter” Libby, was convicted for committing whatever crime Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald had charged him of committing, Underneath Politics has learned.
“It makes me sick,” said long time Democratic voter Betty Granath. “To think he did what it is that he did is beyond comprehension. How could he betray the trust of the American people like that? I haven’t been this outraged since that Florida lady (Katherine Harris) did whatever it is that she did to help George W. Bush illegally win the 2000 election.” Kenneth Johns from Santa Monica, California, echoed the sentiments of Ms. Granath. “Maybe Karl Rove put Mr. Libby up to the hideous thing that he did wrong during the time when so many scandalous things were being done by the Republicans in power. It’s disgraceful!” Ms. Granath thinks Bush should not impeach Mr. Libby under any circumstances. “I hope President Bush makes it clear to the American people that no matter who you are, if you do what Scooter Libby did, you will go to jail for however long you should go to jail for… if you did something like he did.”
Mr. Johns wonders how Scooter Libby will inform his children of what Daddy did. “I’ve never heard of him before today and don’t know if he has kids, but if he does, I’m sure sitting them down and saying, ‘Daddy has done a horrible thing to the American people, something that Daddy will try and explain when you’re an adult, and he is going away to pay his debt to society,” will be a very difficult thing.
Mr. Johns also thinks Libby’s fellow inmates will not take so kindly to his offenses. “You don’t want to know what they do to guys that have done what it is that Mr. Libby did,” he said. “Once those prisoners read court documents and decipher his crime, they will do unspeakable harm to his person.”
Though outraged over his offense, Ms. Granath hopes no physical harm comes to Scooter Libby. “Maybe they could separate him from the rest of the prison population,” she said. “I don’t know how much damage inmates in a white collar prison could do, but something tells me it would only aggravate his mild case of arthritis. This is America after all, not an American prison being run in Iraq.” Underneath Politics

| Feinstein quits committee under war-profiteer cloud |
| 03.29.07 (12:34 pm) [edit] |
|
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has abruptly walked away from her responsibilities with the Senate Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee after a report linked her votes to the financial well-being of her husband's companies, which received billions of dollars worth of military construction contracts she approved. an online report from the Silicon Valley, Feinstein's resignation followed six years of subcommittee work during which time her alleged conflict of interest stemmed from her husband Richard C. Blum's ownership of Perini Corp. and URS Corp. Feinstein, chairman and ranking member of the subcommittee, regularly reviewed and accepted contracts from her husband's companies for not only construction work for military bases, but also addressing "quality of life" issues for the veterans of the United States military services. "As MILCON leader, Feinstein relished the details of military construction, even micromanaging one project at the level of its sewer design," wrote Peter Byrne in the report. "She regularly took junkets to military bases around the world to inspect construction projects, some of which were contracted to her husband's companies, Perini Corp. and URS Corp." He suggested perhaps Feinstein resigned "because she could not take the heat generated by metro's expose of her ethics… Or was her work on the subcommittee finished because Blum divested ownership of his military construction and advanced weapons manufacturing firms in late 2005?" The writer also noted another reason could be that since that subcommittee is responsible for veterans' "quality of life" issues, perhaps she was trying to distance herself from the military's failure to provide decent medical care for wounded servicemembers. "Feinstein abandoned MILCON as her ethical problems were surfacing in the media, and as it was becoming clear that her subcommittee left grievously wounded veterans to rot while her family was profiting from the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. It turns out that Blum also holds large investments in companies that were selling medical equipment and supplies and real estate leases – often without the benefit of competitive bidding – to the Department of Veterans Affairs, even as the system of medical care for veterans collapsed on his wife's watch," he wrote. The Metroactive report, based on research partly funded by the Investigative Fund of the Nation Institute, noted that as of the end of 2006, federal documents showed three companies in which Blum's financial entities owned a total of $1 billion in stock got $17.8 million for medical equipment and supplies (Boston Scientific Corp.), $12 million for medical supplies and equipment (Kinetic Concepts Inc.), and additional funding through lease contracts (CB Richard Ellis). But remember folks, the Rethuglicans have the "Culture of corruption." Don't expect to see THIS on CNN... World Net Daily

| German judge rules Koran allows wife abuse |
| 03.22.07 (6:02 pm) [edit] |
|
BERLIN (AFP) - A German woman judge has refused a Moroccan-born woman permission to file for divorce by interpreting the Koran as allowing husbands to beat their wives. "Where are we living? Woman judge allows beating in marriage... and invokes the Koran," said a front-page headline in Germany's top-selling Bild newspaper, reflecting the widespread angry reaction on Thursday. "This Moroccan woman has the same right to protection from a violent husband as any German woman. Anything else would be misconceived sensitivity to the benefit of the husband and would amount to racist discrimination against the wife," said the Tageszeitung daily. The Central Council of Muslims in Germany also condemned the decision. "The judge should have made a decision based on the German constitution instead of the Koran," said spokeswoman Nurhan Soykan, who said that violence and mistreatment, regardless of the gender of the victim, were also grounds for divorce in the Islamic world. A court in the western city of Frankfurt on Wednesday upheld a complaint of bias against the judge lodged by the lawyer of the 26-year-old woman, who has two children. The woman had filed for immediate divorce on the grounds that the husband, also of Moroccan origin, regularly beat her and threatened to kill her. The claims were backed up by a police report. But the female judge, who has not been named, made clear in a letter that the wife's bid had little chance of approval because, according to her, Islamic law allowed a man to strike his wife. German politicians from all parties were united in disgust at the judgement. "When the Koran takes precedence over the German Basic Law, then I can only say: Good night Germany," Ronald Pofalla, the secretary general of the conservative Christian Democratic Union of Chancellor Angela Merkel, told Bild. Hans-Christian Stroebele, of the opposition Greens, said the kind of abuse suffered by the woman should be punished by German criminal law. Y! News

| Global Warming: Moving Towards Metrosexuals |
| 03.17.07 (6:36 pm) [edit] |
By Daniel Clark Mar 17, 2007 | |
The latest point of emphasis in the global warming movement is that cattle farming endangers the planet by producing too much methane. So now, steaks and hamburgers are classified as instruments of destruction, along with large vehicles, lawn mowers, and charcoal grills. It can't be much longer before cowboy movies, cigars and hockey are held to be enemies of the earth as well.
This has got to be the most blatant assault on guyhood since ABC moved Coach to the same night as Roseanne, and turned Hayden Fox into Phil Donahue. It's a wonder that liberals don't cut to the chase, by simply claiming that global warming is caused by testosterone. Then, they could make public school nurses siphon the offending fluid from the boys during health class.
Many environmentalists believe that the earth is a living organism, personified by the Greek goddess Gaia. Conveniently, it turns out that Gaia is a shrew, who demands that her men be reduced to henpecked, metrosexual noodles. Manliness makes Gaia angry, and we wouldn't like her when she's angry, because she'll turn into a green monster and start smashing everything to bits. Hell hath no fury like an earth goddess exposed to excessive cattle-produced methane emissions.
Wouldn't it be more plausible if a few items like styling gel, latte makers and tofu were said to destroy the planet as well? Perhaps, but that would not serve the purpose of expanding the base of the global warming movement. Since no liberal cause can produce much support on its own, any one of them must ally itself with all other liberal causes, so that they can pool their resources.
That's why it's almost impossible to distinguish the original purpose of a left-wing political rally. What starts out being an 'anti-war' demonstration will invariably become an convention of environmentalists, gun control advocates, pro-abortionists, animal rights activists, racial Balkanists, and outright Communists, because that's the only way to prevent the size of the crowd from being laughably small. Therefore, environmental alarmists must incorporate other causes within their own, in order to keep their core of support relatively large and energized. Clearly, they've determined their alliance with the feminists to be vital to these ends.
It's not coincidental that the icon of the global warming movement is former vice president Al Gore, who, during the 2000 presidential campaign, sought advice from feminist author Naomi Wolf on how to become an "alpha male." Needless to say, she did not suggest that he scarf down a steak sandwich while sitting behind the wheel of a riding mower. Instead, her solution was to dress him in earth tones, as if obsessing over his wardrobe was any way to attain guydom. Never is it manly to ask, "does this make my butt look big," even if you want the answer to be yes.
For Wolf to tell Gore that he'd become an "alpha male" just by wearing the right clothing is a little like a mother patronizing her young child. She probably got the idea when Gore put a bucket over his head and said, "Look, Ms. Wolf, I'm an astronaut," and she replied, "Yes, of course you are, dear."
Images of global destruction being more powerful than images of normalcy and stability, Gore and friends are bound to win the competition for people's emotions. Hence, they are now deterring any analysis of the issue, by calling skeptics "global warming deniers," a not very subtle comparison to neo-Nazis. If we succumb to this intimidation like a bunch of namby-pamby rice cake eaters, the debate will be lost for good.
Thus, the global warming movement seeks to repress guyhood in order to perpetuate itself. If a guy is shown a picture of a sad-looking polar bear adrift on an ice floe, his first thought will be something like, "I've heard that bear steaks are tough, but maybe if you marinated them in beer, they'd turn out all right." At that point, the alarmists' emotional ploy is foiled. In a world without guy stuff, however, his vacant mind may be invaded by irrationalities like, "Who will take care of the polar bears' children?"
In this chicken-and-the-egg scenario, the success of the global warming movement is both the cause and effect of our society's emasculation. It would have never gotten this far if the "Nineties Man" hadn't paved the way. When "I feel your pain" became a successful presidential campaign slogan, we should have known that charcoal-grilled steaks would soon be on the endangered list.

| Priests to purify site after Bush visit |
| 03.09.07 (2:41 pm) [edit] |
|
GUATEMALA CITY - Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday. "That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday. Bush's seven-day tour of Latin America includes a stopover beginning late Sunday in Guatemala. On Monday morning he is scheduled to visit the archaeological site Iximche on the high western plateau in a region of the Central American country populated mostly by Mayans. Tiney said the "spirit guides of the Mayan community" decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of "bad spirits" after Bush's visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace. He also said the rites — which entail chanting and burning incense, herbs and candles — would prepare the site for the third summit of Latin American Indians March 26-30. Bush's trip has already has sparked protests elsewhere in Latin America, including protests and clashes with police in Brazil hours before his arrival. In Bogota, Colombia, which Bush will visit on Sunday, 200 masked students battled 300 riot police with rocks and small homemade explosives. The tour is aimed at challenging a widespread perception that the United States has neglected the region and at combatting(sic) the rising influence of Venezuelan leftist President Hugo Chavez, who has called Bush "history's greatest killer" and "the devil." Iximche, 30 miles west of the capital of Guatemala City, was founded as the capital of the Kaqchiqueles kingdom before the Spanish conquest in 1524. Yahoo! News Via: AP How bout clearing the bad spirits of poverty, drug cartels, and rampant corruption in the area while they're at it?

| Hunters clean up after illegal immigrants |
| 03.04.07 (3:54 pm) [edit] |
They call themselves "hunters who care." Their goal is to rid the desert of the trash left behind by illegal immigrants. Saturday, they fanned out across the Amado area to make a difference. "It was like a big surprise. I thought it would be clean and no trash. Just of bunch of trees and stuff," said Matt Aragon. Matt spots more than just wildlife when he goes hunting. "...a bunch of trash and it's causing damage to the environment." Most of the garbage was left behind by illegal immigrants. It's a sight Mother Nature wouldn't be proud of. That's why Matt and other hunters are bagging up the mess. "You come outside to be outside and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and it's hard to do that when you come out, as there's trash all over the place." Backpacks, water bottles, clothing.... Volunteers have their work cut out for them. They're picking up bags of trash. "We'll find thousands of backpacks, thousands of water bottles, toothpaste, toothbrushes, clothes, along the trip." In just a few hours, piles of garbage bags filled a dumpster. "It feels really good. That way, there's not a lot of trash everywhere and it's nice and clean." "We can probably never get it all cleaned up, but we want to try." & nbsp; A good effort in a never-ending challenge to keep our desert clean. KVOA Tuscon
