Saddam: A Tribute
11.06.06 (3:45 pm)   [edit]
...Living under tyranny may not be ideal, but it is not impossible. In the Soviet Union, life took on a character of its own, in which the human spirit managed to flourish in spite of the political constraints. The literature generated in those conditions can still inspire us. Today, many former Soviet citizens feel no more free under the yoke of global capitalism than they did before, and some would like to see the return of Stalinism. The people of China seem in no rush to jettison a regime that holds out the prospect of prosperity at the expense only of liberty.

Even in Britain, our supposed attachment to our supposed freedom turns out to be tenuous. We seem content to toss aside ancient liberties in the face of a dubious war on terror, and we live, cheerily enough, under a regime of surveillance that the KGB might have envied.

Saddam offered his people a harsh deal. Yet, their lives were at risk only if they chose to challenge his authority. Now, they die because of the sect to which they happen to belong. Soon, their country may fall prey to a savage civil war. If that happens, the Iranians will doubtless intervene, along, perhaps, with Turkey and Israel. No one can predict where that might lead, but the outcome is unlikely to be positive for peace, prosperity, justice or, indeed, human rights.

If Saddam were still in power, he would have stopped this happening. Iraq's dissidents would have paid a price, but the rest of us would be a lot better off. As he goes to meet the hangman, the world has cause to rue his demise.

Just absolutely amazing.  Be sure to read the comments...

Americans are arrogant. They are trying to force democracy in a country who is not yet ready to undertake such politics.

Thus what the Americans are doing is making conditions worse. Trust them ...

Nice choice this so-called journalist is making for the people of Iraq. "It's alright to allow Saddam and his ilk to rape your wives and daughters, cut off your noses and ears, and pillage your money and your dignity- after all, for you to be so opressed benefits the rest of us." What a joke.

For a student, you sure are ignorant of history.

Oriana Fallaci would laugh in your face, if not slap it.

Reply to: PastorDave Dave, thouloo... he is NOT sayng Saddam was a good guy, and for God's sake Dave, do you think the half million dead Iraquis or their families give two shits about your precious emerging democracy right now? What you've termed as the "so called" journalist says is true in the spirit in which he wrote it. He's not even an apologist for Saddam. Why is it that if anyone say a friggen word that recognizes the least bit that this isn't a simple situation, you goofs rake them over the coals? Seems to me you must not be all that sure of your position so, like a scared child, you attack anyone who points out that mommy and daddy aren't perfect.

"for God's sake Dave, do you think the half million dead Iraquis or their families give two shits about your precious emerging democracy right now?"

Link? Half a million? From the bogus Lancet article? Provide sources for once, not just a straw man.

The fact that 70+% of Iraqis braved terrorists, explosions and bombs to vote in their first FREE elections in 50+ years means nothing?

"What you've termed as the "so called" journalist says is true in the spirit in which he wrote it."

OK, this in itself just reinforces what a fascist tool you are.

Read the ENTIRE article, "and the comments," before you start your personal attacks.

I read the entire article, not the comments... have no desire to read the comments. As for the number of Iraqis killed, you pick a number. I love it. Can we agree it's more than one? Probably not. Okay thouloo, it's going jut swimmingly. Don't see your ass over there. Seems to me if you're such a true believer you'd find a way to serve. Just another chicken hawk like the Pres.

B8ut don't rush. I've received six unsolicited emails from friends of mine who ARE serving in the last week, all of whom were all for this when they started. Not ONE of them believes that we're doing good any longer, but what do they know. Surely their not as bright as you. Oops, I got off subject slightly... my apologies.

And please, fascist tool? Still having trouble with definitions aren't you?

Get that G.E.D yet? (That's an ad homimenemenemenemen attack, by the way.)

love the "never forget who did it thing to the left... I know, I know, it's Clintons fault we haven't found him since Bush has been in office, and in fact, when Bush said he wasn't too worried about Osama any longer, it was just a slip of the tongue, and nowhere near as bad as Kerry's botched joke. In fact if John Kerry hadn't spoken out against the war in Viet Nam thirty friggen years ago, none of this would have happened, would it?

Your brain will be fun for scientists to study someday.

ALL the answer is NO...

I can say, no I did not ask God to be born in America. It could have been elsewhere. I am blessed beyond measure to be where I am. I do not feel myself to be superior to other nationalities. If anything, I think we as Americans have a greater responsibility to the rest of the world. And with that mindset, I have supported the war in Iraq. I think it was entered for a truly noble cause. Unfortunately, it has not been conducted with the quality or nobility it has needed. I blame the Democrats, and much of the jealous world, for most of this. But we now have a mess.

If the people in another part of the world want to live under a dictatorship, and choose abject poverty and ignorance, and poor health and hopelessness, then I would not want to lift a finger to change things. But I sincerely doubt that was the will of the people of Iraq.

Um, well gee and what fact did you use? The voter turnout? - which wasn't anywhere near 70 percent by the way, but was certainly high and I'm all for it. Nowhere near the point of course, but still, you're right, you quoted a fact. Um, and what figure would you use for the number of iraqi's killed since you didn't like the one I LOWERED simply because I knew you'd jump on the source. Your government doesn't consider Iraquis worth enough as people to even provide a count.

So bright boy, what FACTS can you quote that disprove what the author said, realizing, of course that he was simply making a point and not calling Saddam a great guy?

Come on, show your smarts. Facts only, since that's your complaint, oh, and they have to be from sources I won't question - since that how YOU play.

What a twinkie.

Great logic there Dave. You blame the Democrats? Surely that's a joke. I'll assume it is, or I'll have to add a couple of "really"s to my reply from DrForbush's post last night.

Yes, I used "voter turnout."

Once again, you provide no cite.

Surrogate, you prove why liberals should never be allowed to be in power in American politics, as you have no answers, just bullshit. I asked you for cites and resources, and you attack me. Typical...

A source where it was nowhere near 70 percent?

Of course, you won't provide it, it's just what you "feeeeeel."

WTF is your point?

"I LOWERED simply because I knew you'd jump on the source."

And your source is, dickhead?

You STILL argue like a teenager. Sad for someone nearly 50.

Folks: THIS is the American left.

"So bright boy, what FACTS can you quote that disprove what the author said, realizing, of course that he was simply making a point and not calling Saddam a great guy?

Come on, show your smarts. Facts only, since that's your complaint, oh, and they have to be from sources I won't question - since that's how YOU play."

and of course,

"What a twinkie."

OK, then state a cite, dipshit.

Feeeeeings is not an argument.

You NEVER can quote a cite.

Typical libreral.

Quote, dickhead?

I can and will quote facts. You just state feeeeeeeelings.

Moron.

this is why this country is doomed.

I get it, you think I know nothing and you have real facts, so, let me repeat the challenge AGAIN then:

"So bright boy, what FACTS can you quote that disprove what the author said, realizing, of course that he was simply making a point and not calling Saddam a great guy?

Come on, show your smarts. Facts only, since that's your complaint, oh, and they have to be from sources I won't question - since that's how YOU play."

You guys get so engrossed in yelling at each other that no one bothers to present the facts.. I see smoke screens all around. It's difficult to argue that the majority of the US is fed up with the way things have been handled. The idea of blaming anyone other than who has been in power is, well, laughable.

By the way, consider that when people stop by and leave a comment, they may be coming from a different culture, perspect and value system and may even have a language barrier. Barkign at someone right off the bat doesn't leave much room for learning from them.. of course, if you already know more than everyone else, what's the point, I guess.

And, PastorDave, if you are reading this thread.. why do you think the US has a greater responsibility to the rest of the world? Does that not suggest that we are somehow superior to other countries?

How ironic, given that our foreign aid commitment is a disgrace and hovers at the bottom of the barrel in comparison to others. Strange.

Goodness, all kinds of issues going on here with comments. I'm not a democrat. I don't have a plan to lead the country to greatness, if that's what you are asking. But if I had my way, I would like to see some reform in our voting system. That would be a good place to start. :)
